0212 - French Policeman
Added 2023-04-20 08:00:02 +0000 UTCA single appearance character who saves the day. I like his cape. I like basically anyone with a cape.
It is possible that this is him in Simpsons Comics #23, which we covered last week:
If so, he has aged a little since Bart's first trip to France, and clearly does not recognise him.
As a child, I thought the piece of candy that he gives to Bart was what magically gave Bart the ability to speak French. On further reflection, I think the intention is that Bart actually has learned some French during his trip and his moment of triumph comes from not being as dumb as he (or we) thought. An emotional and intellectual win for a character who has been beaten down all episode, providing the audience with an uplifting victory. All this was lost on young Cooper, where magic Duolingo candy is a thing.
