as you all probably know by now, this winter has been the best time to see northern lights around the world for the next 25 years (according to an instagram reel I saw, those don’t lie do they?). Iceland is of course the ideal place to enjoy this particular show, and has given me plenty of opportunities to experiment. as you can see, the scanner was having some trouble figuring out the framing because of how dark the photos are, but that is all part of the experiment. I know there is no way for me to capture their true magnificence, so instead, I’m eager to create something else - something that feels otherworldly. I always prefer to create with my film camera, as it makes me feel more present in the moment and less analytical of the photos right as I’m capturing them, but to prove you don’t need fancy equipment to play around, the latter half of this post is all photos taken with my iphone 11. a totally different look, but valuable in it’s own right. in both cases, I set my camera to long exposure and either let the movement come on it’s own - my breath and the shakiness of my hands - or intentionally moved around in different ways to see how the light translated onto the frame. I urge you to try it out, it might surprise you what you end up with.
coming up this week, I’ll be starting my “inspiration” series, where I employ you to help me choose a photographer to inspire a roll of film. I began testing it out last year before closing down my patreon and I always felt bummed I hadn’t seen it through. so now is my chance.
