White women who adopt presentation styles associated with blackness are considered beautiful (see Kardashian modified lips, butts, hair, etc). Meanwhile Black women with these features are considered undesirable and unprofessional (“ghetto”, “ratchet”, policing black hairstyles in schools, military, workplaces, etc.). That part is the problem. The same things are interpreted and valued differently based on race. It’s known as blackophilia/blackophobia. We love Black aesthetics and culture but we fear/hate Black people themselves.

There are a lot of people who can tan all they want, but their genetics don't enable them to get this dark. If you're fair skinned with a pinky undertone, there's no way you could ever tan and be that dark. Therefore, Raven's genetic makeup obviously enables her to do so... I'm honestly more concerned about the incredibly high risk of skin cancer that Raven has from all this tanning. The statistics alone scared me enough to stop tanning in my 20s. This might be more of a self esteem issue. When I was in my early 20s, I thought I looked disgusting without a tan. Since healing that relationship with my body, I no longer care. Perhaps there's some deep hidden self esteem stuff going on? Not sure.

I get what raven’s trying to say (“I should be allowed to tan and it not be considered blackface, esp if there is no malicious intent”), but the justification given was very delulu and poorly explained. Your few friends (and matter of fact, your intent) do not dictate public perception. You are overly tanned mama, literally to the point of being just a few shades lighter than Monet. Intent does not absolve you of the impact of your actions. As for Monet not pushing back, um, DUH? Why would she? For brownie points on the internet? This is her colleague and friend, and she wants to have this space be safe for her guests to speak their mind. I really don’t think Bob would’ve been this guard dog everyone is pretending he is. Yes, maybe would’ve pushed back a little and challenged Raven, but don’t think he would’ve dragged her like people want him to. Great interview Monet!!!

You also have to realize that’s she’s “working” and some choose to play the game—that’s where the money is unfortunately. There is a distinction between the show and the podcast. While I don’t have to agree or like everything about Monet to support her work, I do realize that the girl is trying to get his coins up—she made that clear in the last episodes of the podcast. So is it realistic to hold her to a standard that she doesn’t abide by? And these can be moral issues, so it’s honestly up to you to decide where to draw the line.
