So I get wanting to have a conversation about why business owners do what but at the end of the day it was humorously posed genuine question as to why these seemingly random business owners start their businesses. esp since in america using your business capital to do what other members of your ethnic group have done/help facilitate is a very niche and fairly unknown experience unique to immigrants.

Sometimes it’s not about passion, but rather finding opportunity where you can to make your money. The freedom to pursue something that you’re passionate about truly is a privilege and sometimes you just fall into opening a convenience store just because those were the resources you had or the cards you were dealt. Just speaking from my personal POV as a Chinese immigrant, my family started restaurants not because we were passionate about food service, but because that was something that was already long established within our community - Chinese fast food restaurants. We relied on the knowledge and experience of those in our community who opened up restaurants before us. And sometimes it paid the bills and sometimes it didn’t. I asked my mother what she wanted to do growing up, but being a foreign language translator at the UN was just not in the cards made available to her. Similarly, my closest friend owns/runs/operates convenience stores all across Brooklyn. As a first generation Yemeni-American, these were the foundations that his communities laid out for him so that he could continue that trajectory. I know he’d much rather be a data scientist though. I think that it’s great that you’re able to find joy in work whether or not you’re making a ton of money. And to be able to do that without the safety net of things like racial background, schooling, generation wealth, etc. is something to be commended. But it is dismissive to those who just need to do what needs to be done to pay their bills and provide for their families - even if that’s opening up a convenience store without an affinity for snacks. Crypto-bros, however, are a whole different discussion. These seem more like people who already have wealth or financial backing/safety who want to accumulate more wealth. In that regard, I do agree with you that this freedom to do the thing just to get more money - being rebranded as “hustle culture” is a fallacy. Again, in many cases, being able to take the risk is predicated on what resources you have available and whether or not you can pay your bills if everything goes south. Most of us don’t have that luxury. True hustle culture is overcoming hardship and boundaries to make money at a job to provide for our families DESPITE not finding joy in that job.

Context matters too though. If my best friend wore an ugly outfit, I’m not going to go to somebody else and say that because then that opens up the doors for other people to talk about them and I wouldn’t want to publicly embarrass my friend. Now if my best friend burnt some cookies, I would tell somebody else because it’s not that deep. It’s like my siblings, I can joke and talk about my siblings but if somebody else says something I would get upset so why even open those doors.
