I can joke about my dead parent, my sexual assaults, my disability and find it helpful. BUT I would be not laughing at someone who hasn’t experienced those things to be making those jokes.

2024-08-28 06:06:04 +0000 UTCAs a man living with HIV, I think "I went to pride and my phone died... of AIDS" is funny in that absurd and shocking sort of way. Like I didn't laugh outright at first, I hollared like "Oo-oo-oh jesus" first in that way we do in the south when something is funny and offensive. But I still thought it was funny. I can definitely see how it would really piss off anyone who was living through the AIDS epidemic as an adult though. I'm in my mid 40s so I was just a closeted kid when the epidemic was full swing, by the time I came out it was pretty much over (although HIV was still a big problem) so i can't say it would hit me the same way to hear that joke. Older gay men often already feel some amount of animosity toward the youngins and the twinks I think, so to hear a twink tell that joke probably was a double whammy when he told it on that cruise. It's an in-community joke for sure, like I definitely would not be ok with a straight person telling that joke.
