I’m almost done with chapter four. I wasn’t feeling the book at first. I had a bunch of judgement and why’s. It didn’t take long for me to understand the why’s and get on board. I’ve been taking notes like I’m preparing for the round tables we used to have in IB English Lit. Really digging this book and looking forward to dissecting this concept of Afropessimism with y’all.

Okay gonna put this here cause I feel like these notes can help. Afro pessimism: The idea that (non-black) civil society can never fully acknowledge the humanity of African Americans because the exclusion of black people from our notions of humanity, personhood, and citizenship are depend for their very existence upon the exclusion of black people. For example, the American Constitution was born out of a compromise where slaves, who were completely disenfranchised, were counted as three-fifths of a person being so that slave states would get more representation in Congress. Anti-blackness: An ideology that posits the descendants of Africans as inferior to other racial groups. Said differently, anti-blackness is a form of racism directed exclusively at black people.
