2023-06-14 14:46:01 +0000 UTCScience girly here: there's something called shear and right at immediate ground level, like less than a milimetre above the ground, there's no wind because friction from the ground slows the wind down a lot. And then shear from that layer slows down the layer above it. And then shear from that layer slows down the layer above it. So friction from the ground against the wind keeps wind speeds at ground level really low compared to way up high. Think of taking a deck of cards that's on a table, placing your hand on the top one, and pushing the deck to the side. The bottom card doesn't move and each card above it gradually moves more and more in the direction you've pushed the deck.
