Sibling Rivalry: The One About Colorism

Sibling Rivalry: The One About Colorism

I knew RuPaul was a man because her name was usually used as a insult towards women.. If you thought she looked like Man in a dress Black men or women would call her RuPaul . I’ve heard it a lot in old school black films . But I didn’t Watch the show until I was 8 or nine and it was season 3 and the person who stuck out and I remember was Manila . Her confessional look lives rent free in my mind ❤️

Very late, but speaking from a Korean American perspective, even if you're fully Korean but you just happen to be darker skinned, life will be r o u g h. It used to be really bad in Korea, with like having lightening creams and all that, but I think they're mostly better now (I haven't been back in a while so I can't say much - I have heard there are some tanning salons though now?). However in South and Southeast Asia, it's much worse - there are whitening creams, lotions, etc. to try and lighten your skin to be more white. I have friends who had this soap that claimed to lighten your skin :(

Bobs face. lmao. I can't

I would encourage people to learn more about vitiligo so that they can, in some way, understand Michael's decision. A lot of people boil down Micahel Jackson's skin tone change to "he bleached his skin because he didn't want to be black". I can't speak too much about Michael being black and having internalized racism (because I'm white) but I can speak about vitiligo. I have Universal Vitiligo (affects the entire body) like Michael Jackson did. However, because he was black, there was a huge difference in contrast between his skin color and his vitiligo patches. White people with vitiligo can sometimes go unnoticed because there isn't as much of a contrast difference between our skin color and our spots. People get bullied and experience racism solely for being black or brown THEN YOU ADD IN THAT THEIR OWN BODY IS DESTROYING THEIR MELANIN??? Imagine what that does to someone's self image. I'm burying the lead but I hate when people reduce Michael's decision of altering his skin color solely because he "didn't want to be black". There is so much more depth to it.

I think white people wanting to be darker it as much part of the European standard of beauty as dark skinned people wanting to be lighter. I feel like a medium dark complexion was considered beautiful and healthy looking. At least where (and when) I grew up white people who were too pale and couldn't tan would be made fun of as being pasty and sickly looking and were often distraught about their inability to tan.

I recall Zoe Saldana had a prosthetic nose for the Nina Simone role too. And I remember when a model in ANTM was painted darker to resemble Grace Jones.

I loved hearing about Quinta Brunson's school where every subject they related back to black history.

I remember hearing some of the colourism in Korea and other Asian countries is related to tanning or darkened skin being linked to farming and working outside, something considered a working class, less lucrative profession. I think the flip side with white or lighter skinned people now wanting to tan might be related to being indoors a lot ( office jobs etc.) and having the perceived “luxury” of going outdoors and being able to afford to travel to warmer climates and coming back “looking healthy with a tan”. The orginal flip side to the farmer thing in America could also be linked to rednecks, “lower class” people whose skin colour has a connection to the profession.

Megs babes x
