They talked about this in that documentary, how it came at the same time as the anti-war movement during Vietnam. LSD was making people question things, connect with each other, seek deeper meaning, and the. government didn't want that. They are perfectly happy to support and push drugs that made the population docile and dependant, and they make them profit.
