I ALSO searched 2 separate databases of St Lucia slang and the Kwéyòl Dictionary and genuflect has the traditional meaning that it has here in the states. The meaning does not differ in St Lucia. Perhaps it's just select people in Monets "circle" that use this slang term. Maybe it was just monet and that guy at the Bodega? I'd love to be in on this circle of friends and this secret language. Okay I'm a bit late to this chat but this guy Jimmy Carr is a British comedian and he made this joke: https://youtu.be/CJurYs12ay4 In short - lots of people died in the holocaust including lots of travellers and the joke is about people not knowing / caring about that. Now I found this funny. Why? It was a clever and well structured joke, not about people being killed by Hitler but the actual joke hes making is about how racist society is against travellers and like revealing that racism as well as educating people about the holocaust. People don't really talk about racism against travellers mainstream and in my view it was a great way to call that out. But obviously people who the joke was about have the right to be personally offended because it sucks for your dead relatives to be the butt of ANY joke.

I’m curious what y’all’s thoughts are on comedians who do insult-style comedy. Do you feel like they’re given a sort of “PC pass” more than other comedians simply because that’s the style of comedy they advertise? Most of them seem to take the approach that their material may just not be “for you” because of how harsh it is, but also flirting with being problematic and punching down. And it’s not like a roast where you’re in a sort of social agreement of what’s going to happen. Whatcha think?

Being that comedy is subjective, though, isn’t it possible that they’re telling these jokes because THEY think they’re funny? A lot of people laugh when they’re uncomfortable, which is associated with the positive response of laughter. It’s the same reason people watch prank shows or planned awkward interactions.

I think the thing with comedy is that the point is to make you laugh, it is to elicit a mirthful, positive response. Whereas movies, paintings, dance, etc, aren’t really boxed into that. I think if you want to tell “jokes” that make people uncomfortable, you can’t really call it comedy. It’s more like performance art or theater at that point. Comedy is the only art form where the level of positive response is the barometer for success.
