When my dad was 14-15, he witnessed an attempted murder at his apartment complex. My grandma heard a lot of the commotion but my dad’s room had a window that was facing outside so he got a pretty good view. They were both forced to come and testify about what they saw and heard. My grandma was so upset because she had to miss work and my dad had to miss school. The crime- a women who found out her husband was having an affair so she went to the mistress’s complex (where my dad lived) and waited for her to come home on a date with the her own husband. As the lady was trying to unlock her door and not wake her sleeping, oblivious husband and baby, the women waiting in the bushes said, “I’m gonna kill you, bitch.” She stabbed her. Clawed her head with the back of a hammer and chased her around the whole complex. The victim lost her eye and I believe the attacker pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The concept of labelling people as criminals is some biblical medieval morality bullshit of good vs bad as if humans aren't inherently both. Everyone does bad things and there's horrible acts that aren't even illegal or that people get away with daily. The way we handle crime societally is just a reflection of how we deal with ourselves internally, we lock people away and turn them into some "other" and forget about them instead of actually addressing and getting to the bottom of things. Bob needs to learn that dictionary definitions are only useful for understanding the denotations of words, often the vaguest meaning of a word that can apply to every context. I don’t feel great about making a little write-up about this, especially because it has made hilarious content, but Bob often bulldozes nuanced conversations by using dictionary definitions in bad faith to reinforce a bogus point. Dictionaries cannot possibly account for every specific context a word is used in, but still must attempt to provide the reader with enough information to be able to understand the word. This can cause embarrassing confusions when a person tries to apply the dictionary definition of a word to a specific field or context. In the law field of the English-speaking world, a “crime” is a specific type of action that has its own specific traits and consequences. A minor traffic violation, while unlawful, is not considered a crime. So even though double parking is unlawful, and the dictionary definition Bob used defines a crime as an unlawful act, double parking is not a crime, nor is a person who does so a criminal, because the dictionary definition is not adequate for the context Bob is using it in. Another shortcoming of dictionary definitions is their scope of meaning. Like I said before, dictionaries are useful at conveying denotation: the most literal meaning of a word. This misses the connotation of words, or the feelings attached to them (dictionaries are increasingly considering connotations and each has their own philosophy surrounding this, so take this with a grain of salt). Connotation is the important difference between words like “greet” and “accost.” This type of distinction has been lost on this podcast a lot but I’m struggling to remember an example so you’re just going to have to take my word on it. This is, of course, all in addition to the problem inherent with arguing with definitions: it’s pedantic. The intentions and arguments within words is more important.
