Personally I dont like reading digital books because after a while they give me a headache, just like being on any device for too long, so I prefer physical books because I use screens alot. But audiobooks can sometimes even add to the experience of the book if they're done stylistically, for instance the audiobook for Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston voiced by Ruby Dee is amazing, I recommend that to everyone

No tea no shade because I know this is a podcast where we all come to kiki and not take things super seriously, but... I'm a librarian and............. "abolish libraries" is big MAGA energy lol. Libraries are all about democracy of information. Also, most libraries also provide audiobooks- both on CD (vintage) and digital- AND we're all about making sure people know that listening to a book is just as valid as reading a book on paper. Libraries are where the unhoused and underprivileged can come to read the same books that wealthy people can afford to buy- not to mention accessing periodicals and databases. Plus most libraries offer programming that builds community and encourages dialogue across different demographics which builds empathy. And I haven't even started talking about drag queen storytimes and the work many public libraries do to de-stigmatize the Queer community....

Yes yes all of this. I'm biased because libraries were a huge part of my childhood and I'm a little obsessed with them, but having worked in libraries before, most people do not use them solely for the books. They are a vital space for all the reasons you mentioned. Most patrons I saw were older people/people who didn't have access to technology anywhere else. Where else can you go and have free, unfettered access to information? In an era where news media is increasingly skewed, if all you have access to is cable TV and fox news and you can't afford a computer, where else can you go but a library to do your own research and educate yourself? Also as an introverted kid without much money libraries were the only indoor (bc TX is hot) places I could go to get away from my parents and not be expected to buy anything or be looked at weird for being alone. But yes, I also love reading lol, and I'm not a kindle/tablet person bc I need a break from screens wherever I can get it.

i know i'm late, but our libraries are for mothers' groups, play groups for infants, elderly groups, after school groups, language learning groups, reading groups,social groups, computer lessons, internet access for those who don't have internet or devices, references, old news papers, sourcing family history etc. libraries are really a hub of communities and for some it's the only place people can go for free and have human interaction. that;s uk though, not so sure about the states.
