Latch Key is a program run by public schools for parents that work. The child stays at school for up to (I believe) 4 hours after the end of the school day. My boyfriend was a Latch Key kid because his Mom was the Volunteer that would watch the kids. So you'd stay after school and then your parents would pick you up anywhere within that 4 hours. Some schools would actually run the busses again if there were a lot of Latch Key kids.

Point in Bob’s favor: my mom and I didn’t have Disney channel until she was “comfortable” and remarried; my dad (rich) had every channel. Every channel there was. Still has every channel in two different condos. Why wasn’t my rich dad paying for my mom’s cable for me to have Disney??

There’s community through shared experiences. However I identify with Ms. Martha. I raised 2 boys in south GA despite a deadbeat ex. My students would be surprised my stuff was always getting turned off because they thought my $19,000 teacher self was “rich.” 🤣 I took on every extra thing that paid that I could manage. I feel so much guilt for having to ask for their little bit of savings when we lost our home. I stretched at Xmas to get at least 1 nice thing and a lot of not so nice. Became permanently partially disabled when my boys were around 13/14 about the time they became latchkey kids. My boys are now 31 & 33 and trying to tell me what to do and pay for stuff because they worry. I’m blessed to have them and blessed to be a part of this community. ❤️

I didn’t realize how Bob and I had a very similar upbringing. My father was on drugs. (Still a nice guy just sneaky). My grandma on my father’s side is still living a very long life. Mom’s side of the family is from Mississippi and Alabama. My mom, my sister, and I grew up pretty poor but always had the latest gaming system….during Christmas. My mom had to ask my sister and I for money. My mom had every job in the book. The funniest lady! She could have been a comedian. In the words of Bob, “This is wild!” To Monet, answer your mom’s calls every time she calls. My mom passed away recently and I’m regretting all the times I didn’t pick up the phone.

Bob, I have a close friend whose father’s abusive and criminal behavior made her think that she shouldn’t ever become a parent. Everything you said was exactly what she has said in the past. It took a long time for her to realize that her awareness of his failings meant that she could be a successful parent if she chose to do so. I’m just putting that positivity out into the universe and directing it your way - even if you don’t ever become a parent, you are certainly better than your father was because you recognize the ways that you live your life differently. 💕💕💕

Bob I relate to that story, having your parents/family ask you for money is an awful feeling. It really makes you feel like there's no ground under your feet. When I was a teenager my friend's mom was kind enough to let me live with her after I graduated high school, she knew that my mom was insane, and I saved up alot of money there from working to move out and live on my own, but my dad kept asking me for money to where it'd built up to $3k. Thankfully he did eventually pay me back (god knows where he got the money) but it made me feel sick every day. My older brother also asked me for a little over $100 and never paid me back, then I found out he just spent it on weed... I wish there was someone who told me as a teenager not to lend people money even if it's family

I'm the youngest of 5 kids, and by the time I was born I was lucky enough to grow up pretty much normal middle class. But my parents struggled a lot before that because they had my oldest sister when they were still in high school. And that sister ended up sharing a room with all the younger siblings until she was a senior in high school. That's when my parents finally managed to buy a house in the suburbs of the Bay Area. When I think about how different these experiences were between my oldest sister and me, it's so crazy. Same parents, same family. It's pretty wild how my parents pulled that off honestly.

Usually we have a 3rd party person deal the cards so no shenanigans can take place. - Monet didn't grow up rich. lol Yes his family was a little better off, but he wasn't rich. You'll be suprised by how many big ass houses are in the Caribbean. That's why Amanda Seales told people to get their passports so you'll can see what it's really like outside the US. You can have a big ass house in the West Indies and immigrate to America/Canada/UK and be broke as hell, but the money goes longer. That's why you see many ex-pats running to the Caribbean and buying up land and opening up businesses and buying homes to rent. Now him getting $5 day here in Brooklyn, that was most likely to buy lunch and if he was paying $0.75 for transportation, that means he has a reduced fare metro card, so that $5 was just basic survival for Monet.
