I don't really think the category of "straight all American man walk" is supposed to be prescriptive-- they're not saying "men SHOULD walk this way" or "you're not a man if you don't walk this way". Just like how doing femme drag is NOT saying "you're not a real woman if you don't look like Trixie Mattel". It's the fact that it expresses the OPPOSITE that makes it empowering + subversive. I don't really see the harm in recognizing the ways that society expects men to perform a certain way, in fact I found the category really refreshing as someone that struggles with the expectations of what a "man" should present like. It points a mirror at presenting "straight" which I really dig. But I also do agree there's aspects of this that are imperfect and luckily the ballroom scene seems to be constantly involving in terms of language.

The way both of y’all argued about the truth behind Medusa and both being so wrong is SENDING me 😂😂 She was a worshipper of Athena and one day she was raped at the shrine she was caring for and it was ransacked. Athena then appears and is angry at how her shrine is being taken care of so she initially punishes Medusa by taking her beauty, but once she learns what really transpired she gave her the snakes and ability to turn men to stone to protect her from ever being raped again. It’s kind of an intense story and felt really wrong for her to be representing Lust given her story is of a rape survivor.

I disagree, the language around ballroom is constantly changing and it's important to acknowledge what is relevant in modern day. For example referring to 'femme queens' as 'female figures' in modern ballroom

BTDQ really needs to go back and watch all of Kelly’s performances on American Idol. She definitely didn’t coast by hitting whistle tones and literally singing a Celine Dion ballad(I Surrender) with an almost gone voice. Which still drew compliments from Simon. Yea that last part of the podcast definitely left a bad taste imo. I’m pretty confident the circle of ppl criticizing someone who has had a *history* of workplace abuse and the circle of those still vocal about police brutality are the same. The movement to stand up for workers’ rights works in tandem with the movement for police reform/abolition. And love both of them to death, but tbh I dont see them, many other queens or plenty celebs in general speak on politicians like Biden who is increasing police funding and defending them despite murders continuing to happen by their hands. They or any celeb has to, not saying that, I’m no one special and many speak on important issues, just not seeing the “pressuring politicians” when the politician is a Democrat.

As for the category of realness I think you have to go back to how it most likely started. I can only assume it came about because back then these Trans women HAD TO be "passing for real." Back then it meant more than just compliments it also meant their safety the more they were able to pass in the eyes of society. So I think when you think of it with that in mind it's a lot less problematic. Of course now a days Trans women and men don't need anyone's the sign of approval. I also agree that the Dashaun should be the tie breaker if all the main judges have voted evenly. Because we need more screen time of him and that body and face and everything.

also in terms of face and beauty - yeah often people who walk face are very 'conventionally' beautiful but primarily the thing is confidence. what i've seen of ballroom - if you hold your presence, live in your self love, you are celebrated and your beauty is seen and called out. there is the power to redefine beauty, create new conceptions of what beauty is, it's the energy, the crowd response, the connection you create. that's the power of the category. again i just wonder why this is the first place to find it a problem because if we're talking about rupauls drag race or ANTM or literally any singing whatever competition there's so much commentary about who's beautiful and it's much more conventional eurocentric beauty and there's v little wiggle room. u all alllways speak ab drag queens proportions how they need to wear a boob how you would look crazy without boobs as a drag queen cos ur not aquaria sized etc and those are definitely valid hangups in terms of how you're judged in DR and i feel like u are just accepting them and reproducing them without critique yet for a ballroom performer i know these things would not be judged like that at all. if you carry yourself everyone's excited, they're like you're gorgeous etc - in DR and the reviews of DR it's much more rigidly 'conform to these features/shapes or it's bad and if you think it's good it's delusion'. iykwim!

i dont see how the instruction to embody "heterosexual male" as a trope is any different from the general concept of drag? it's a gender performance by queer ppl of colour based on a constructed ideal of "straight man" which we all know exists; i dont think it's problematic to acknowledge its existence or doing so means u are actually essentialising gender. i think it's the very opposite because u are looking that construct in the face and u have to take it apart before u can perform it well, especially as someone in ballroom who typically does not fulfil those socially constructed ideals, especially as ballroom is specifically a haven for ppl whos ids are marginalised. if anyone is qualified to do gender performance in a way that doesn't further entrench gendered norms and power structures it's the ppl for whom ballroom is home. i would contend that any cis/white drag queen who is "giving you WOMANNN" which i have heard from many folk who are ur friends/u dont call problematic is the actually problematic thing because their identities+experiences+basic positionality means that, on default setting, embodying these gender roles for fun is reproducing the represented power dynamics rather than subverting them. i think if we're going to start calling out problematic stuff re gendering the last place it should start is in this context. and i think that starting in this context is itself problematic honestly; rather than equipping the status quo with more reasons to be like "queer ppl cant acknowledge there is a straight cisman walk/ideal image" and dismiss v real ways that the existence of that construct going unacknowledged is a huge part of those very people's marginalisation. compulsory heterocissexuality is literally the fabric of our social reality; i think it is actively harmful to mark out queer poc performing it out loud as something bad or detrimental to gender. imo it's a bit like the whole colour blind ideology. the construct is there. stop letting it be invisible yanno? and also i know u all do it in casual life right, we all joke about doing the white voice or the straight person voice or the whatever. it's cos those things being the top of the white supremacist ideal are what exclude us. when we make fun of em we're taking back the power. hope u will consider xx let me get back to the vid

info: it's just one designer and a bunch of seamsters. cant remember the designers name rn oops but he's on insta and i think the hbo legendary page posted about him which is how i found his/i saw a lil interview. he has to design and they have to produce 50+ outfits each week - it gets less as the series progresses but then can go back up given they have multiple categories in a night etc. they dont have diff teams and sometimes the houses themselves assist with sewing the stuff together

Apologies if some other nerd already explained this, but knowing Medusa’s origins makes the choice of portraying Medusa for lust even more WTF. Medusa was raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple, and yet Athena was a woman-hating hoe and cursed HER instead of cutting Poseidon’s dick off. Medusa becomes pregnant, and is pregnant when she’s slain by Perseus who wants to use her head to stop his mother’s forced marriage (and Perseus is aided by Athena, which is even more like DAMN BITCH, REALLY?) Medusa was punished for the disgusting sexual acts of a man, so casting her as in control is hella weird. I was hella confused why they picked Medusa, like didn’t a lot of us millennial gays have a greek mythology phase? They don’t know no nerds? Because her story has always stuck with me as an example of a classic story that now, through a modern lens, is seen as the injustice it always was. It’s just really weird to portray her as in any way agentic over her sexuality when her whole story is about how she wasn’t, and then even after death she’s still treated as a monster for something a powerful man did! In conclusion, fuck the patriarchy. Good night and god bless.

Idk if you guys know this but Jameela’s gloves were copied from a designed that they asked to work for them and didn’t end up using. The designer is @jan_eneskey on Instagram and they have all the dms posted. You should look into it because it was law’s assistant who contacted them. They are dead copies because I instantly recognized them and thought it was actually their design that was on the show but turns out it wasn’t.
