Queens!!! The conversation about higher education...You both spoke to some great points. Monet's point about opera singers was spot on. However, I have to agree with Bob, higher arts' degrees aren't necessary for getting a job in that field. I studied cello performance and graduated with a Masters and a Performance Certificate. While it is helpful in terms of getting jobs in music education, it is almost entirely useless in Orchestral auditions since those jobs are based solely on your playing and ability. So...$178,000 later, I've got some expensive paper that says I can play complex sixteenth notes well. ;)

This debate was all. over. the. place. lol. Acting (innate talent developed by training but kind of a skill that's part of everyday life) is not the same as flying, hairdressing, opera singing that you have to learn on purpose and pretty systematically. That said, I think you're both right. A test alone isn't enough to prove you have a high skill level - most of driving you learn from experience after you pass the test and encounter real-life situations, for example - but people place too much emphasis on higher education and ignore self-education, talent, work etc. Soooo many people are shitty at their job but can wave a piece of paper saying they are an expert and we meet naturally gifted teachers, artists, writers all the time! No amount of teaching can make you truly brilliant at something for which you have no real talent. Higher education is such a scam with all the money that's involved and in my opinion the bubble will burst here in the UK pretty soon. Countries like Germany where they have apprenticeships, more professional qualifications and respect education outside of universities have a much better-educated and empowered workforce.

i agree with Bob's side, that if you can pass a standardized test you should work equally as Monét's side that logs hours and goes thru school. However, Joe Shmoe could study for a BAR exam, or any standardized test for a week and pass, however that does not mean he knows more than the student who went to the school and learned extra materials that possibly weren't on the exam. Standardized tests don't encompass the entirety of that field, because if they did that would be one long ass test lol. However, i still believe higher education is a scam, employers don't even care about what degree you have
