He's been mayor of Tübingen since 2007, one of the earliest mayors of Germany's Green party. He championed many environmental policies but quit his party in 2023 because he'd been saying racist stuff since 2015. (For context, political parties in Germany are constitutionally forced to be very democratic (bc of the Nazis), including when it comes to expelling party members. Expulsions are decided by internal courts, not party leaders alone, so it takes years typically). Oh yeah he also said at the start of the covid pandemic that we shouldn't care because the old people would die anyway.

2024-12-26 19:59:50 +0000 UTCAfter a quick google it seems that Yorty is a variation of the German Yordi which is a diminutive of the German Surname Jördan derived from the given name Jordan. He probably inherited it from his paternal grandfather who was Pennsylvania Dutch.
