Hey everyone, the big day is here! At least for you Patreon subscribers anyway! Yes, it's The Ten Worst Songs of 2023, 2 days early just for you! I've uploaded it here to Patreon directly, AND included the YouTube link above, that way if it's not available on YouTube for some reason (I don't expect any problems, but at the same time I ALWAYS expect problems) you'll still be able to watch it here, but I know some of you prefer the YouTube link so you can cast it to a TV or whatever.
Also, if you could do me two favors: First, please no spoilers in the YouTube comments. Feel free to be vague ("Oh I never even heard #5" or "I totally called #2") but try and let as many people enjoy it without spoiling anything. And Second, when you see this video pop up on Saturday when it goes live, if you could click on it anyway and let it play through (maybe in a muted tab) that REALLY helps the algorithm. Everyone tells you to like and subscribe, but clickthrough rates are what ACTUALLY drive the algorithm. Any time you see a thumbnail and DON'T click on it, YouTube goes "oh, not that many people are clicking on this, so we should show it to fewer people". Anyway, that'd be a great help.

I didn't even know most of these songs existed, though I've heard that stupid Start the Fire one a few times on Pandora. And yes, I genuinely think that Britney Spears song was an AI experiment. Everything about it just screams AI Generated, from the artwork, to the music, to the lyrics, it immediately reminded me of those "If so-and-so sang this other band's song" videos.

I liked how you said that Britney's song is objectively worse than stuff from her past. I will always argue that there are objective values in art to judge, even in something so extremely subjective as music. Sadly too many people approach it with "you just don't like it and are trying to justify why it's bad because you don't like it" shite. Same with movies, but at least logical inconsistencies in scriptwriting or worldbuilding will always be a genuine flaw to point out.

Nicki Minaj seems to features heavily, she is 41 years old now and still singing about pussy. I think music is still stupid like 13 years ago, shitty rap songs, redneck country boy songs - but we at least have lost the hipster douche bag, frat boy with white socks and shorts music finally (Although one of those songs comes close).

Lazy, minimalist, repetitive, annoying garbage. This is the third year in a row there hasn’t been a song on the list that didn’t become a guilty pleasure.

Right when we were coming out of the pandemic I thought for moment we were going to get back to fun, upbeat, fast pop songs. That lasted maybe six months and then we were back so mid-temp, mumbling, low-effort pop.
