Bonus #194 - Starfield: A Brand New Universe Full of the Same Old Sh!t | Nerd Rants

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/eON9k2vG2H8

Hey everyone, it's Bonus Dose Day, and this week it's an all new Nerd Rant! As I mentioned last year, I was going to start using the Nerd Rant "branding" and formatting for Patreon videos about nerd-pop culture, and I felt it was pretty fitting for a rant about the most talked about, and maybe most argued about game amongst gamers this year. Enjoy!

Buckley looks at the phenomenon of Starfield, possibly the most talked about video game of the year. After 7 years of working on it, developer Bethesda told us this was a "brand new universe" and their most ambitious game to date. But how "NEW" is this experience really? And... does that even matter to old man Buckley?!

Is it just me or does every Bethesda game brag about having a "massive open world" and it's just hours of you running around from place to place barely ever seeing an NPC or an enemy or getting into a fight. Bethesda makes bland, generic games that are always improved by modders. If nobody modded Skyrim to look 1,000 times better nobody would give a shit about it or Fallout. I just wish there were mods on the Playstation and that they were easier to use. Also, Heel vs babyface is a massive twat, having a meltdown for views and clicks. Embarrassing. Get some therapy bro.

The companions get super annoying once you did their quest and the flirt and in relationship dialogues sound like a hermit, who's only source was a cheap love novel, has written them. xD Overall I enjoyed the game, because I also love the famliarity and I find the setting/style is very important. I don't really like the whole nordic/viking theme in Skyrim and I despise the whole 60s crap from Fallout, even if it's meant ironic or something... And space stuff is more in my favorable themes. So I FINALLY got the game I wanted in a theme that I like. I also like extensive menu game play from time to time xD

This was supposed to be a response to your reply on my first comment. I'm not sure why it put it as an entirely new comment

Well, I was having this conversation with someone the other day, and they brought up the same point. My counter argument is that, as far as we know, most of known space is desolate and has no sign of life, so the fact that most planets are "void" seems pretty accurate to me. That's all part of the excitement of realistic space travel, searching the the seemingly endless void for the unexpected. So in that regard, I think they nailed it. That being said, I do wish that the planers that did have civilization had MASSIVE cities, because I feel that would be more realistic after a couple hundred years since vacating earth

There's definitely some fun stuff where you just go... "ok I'll go to this system, huh there's an abandoned farm here? What's that gonna be all about?" and you find some crazy stuff that was going on there, but it really just feels like it didn't need to be spread across 1000 planets... give me 20 planets that are packed full of stuff! Why does this settled planet have ONE city on it?! But yes, I find myself returning to it to just go exploring or take on bounty jobs for the fun of it.

No, only my friends can call me pigfucker...

I've got just over 5 days of game play now. I will say that I agree with most of your breakdown, and I even had a slump about 30 hours in where I just didn't think I was going to get back into it. However, then I REALLY got back into it. Maybe it's partly because I work in such a desolate location and I use games to "escape my reality", but I find it captivating and there is enough variation in the questing and non quest related activities that keeps me engaged. I'd like to add that I'm playing this in true adventure mode, where I have completely refrained from looking up anything on Google or watching videos of tips and tricks. For me, there has been plenty of discoveries and that makes it exciting for me. I think too many people get bored because we live in a time where many people look up XP/money hacks, the "best way to level up", what perks to choose, so on so forth. I just have played it and made all the decisions that I would make if I were in the position of main character and make the discoveries that I believe was intended by Bethesda. I 100% agree with the familiarity angle, and that's okay. I told a buddy of mine that to me, it's like skyrim and Mass Effect had a baby, and I love it. So far I'm at level 44, and I have so many plans and a lot of stuff that I'm excited about in the game. I don't forsee myself getting tired of it or feeling like it was a waste of time. Sure, there's some negatives, but all in all, it REALLY scratches that itch I always have for solo campaign exploration games, as I don't really do online gaming. My biggest negative feeling is about the very one dimensional NPCs and the fact that your decisions don't carry much weight either way, unless you're an empath (which I am). I find that can be frustrating when you want to lash out at someone because they suck, but you refrain from violence so you don't get a lecture from Sarah for the 11th time tonight.

Justin Hudson

That's one of the reasons I'm absorbed for sure

I have to give it credit… it definitely LOOKS amazing. I can’t believe how far video game graphics have come, still.

I am absolutely here for the return of nerd rants! Will have to watch after work but the hype is already through the roof!

I haven't played Starfield and honestly it's probably not the kind of thing I'll get into nowadays. But regarding your point about every aspect of Starfield having been done better in some other game... isn't that basically the case for every Bethesda game? Having played a decent amount of Elder Scrolls and Bethesda Fallout games in my time, I really can't imagine expecting anything else from them. In my mind Bethesda's shtick has always been "we have the most stuff and even though none of it's the best, most of it is good enough".

Branden Lange

It's funny that the nerd rants, of all video series you make, are the ones you involve your girlfriend in. Nice contrast.
