EARLY ACCESS: Gen-Z: Too Soft for... Rom-Coms?

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/l7ExkPzVLxc

Hey everyone, it's Early Access day! If you had told 16-year-old Buckley that in 25 years the world would become MORE afraid of seeing a lady with no clothes on, I'd say "No way, have you seen this Internet thing they got now? EVERYONE is going to grow up seeing them... if anything, in 25 years from now we'll be like those tribes in National Geographic magazines where no one cares about nudity anymore because it's so common!" But, it's 2023, and we never manage to run out of things to complain about. So, enjoy this week's video about the young people on social media who are trying to make "being repressed" look cool. Plus, a really fun "Buckley loses it on a comment" moment.

What will the 2020s be known for? Well, if social media is any indication, we may be seeing a new rise of Puritans! Buckley looks at the negative reactions to a brand new Sydney Sweeney rom-com being Rated R, as well as the frequent and ongoing complaints about... "love" scenes and, umm... "undressed individuals" in film and TV (hey, we don't want to make the kids uncomfortable, now do we!?) Is it possible that the generation with the most unfiltered access to the most depraved parts of the Internet are NOT desensitized, but instead growing up prudes?

EARLY ACCESS: Gen-Z: Too Soft for... Rom-Coms?

Honestly what they should do is put a warning. Like something that TELLS you youre gonna see sexual content so that we get a heads up and know not to watch it if we arent comfortable. Right at the beginning so you cant miss it. Oh wait...

MiezuteCosplay

Ok prude

Christopher Williams

I'd say that's not accurate at all but you do you.

Emma Anderson

It's not a Gen Z thing, really. It's a chick thing. Many women, of all ages and generations, dislike overt sexuality. It's threatening to them. And since they feel like rom coms are for them, having it slide from "soft shit for girls to feel good about themselves and fantasize about their fairytale romance" to "the good shit" makes them mad.

Snooder87

I remember when movies got criticized for being PG-13. And now we’re complaining when they are R-rated?!

Eric Ortiz

The only time I have a problem nudity is sex in video games especially if you can’t skip it, like I don’t want to watch some cringy poorly animated sex scene in mass effect or Witcher, the worst one was a certain character getting railed in the pooper in last of us 2

Captain Bon Clay

People getting this upset over everything these days instead of, you know, just not watching it, is just numbing now. One can only hope that they are just a very loud minority that won’t spoil shit for the rest of us. They need to harden up.

Ash Archer

Yeah, so now they're at the age where us old pricks are at least making fun of adults now for the most part. A few years back when people were like "this new generation is ruining everything!" It was like "most of them can't even drink yet how could they be doing anything?!" Soon they'll be at the point where people are STILL blaming them for things, like when people would use "Millennial" as a term for every young person even though they were talking about teenagers who were in Gen Z (I remember being about 35 and my boss complaining about "these lazy millennials today", meanwhile I was a millennial and worked more than anyone there)

Adam Buckley

you know as a 24 year old Zoomer, we really do go back-and-forth on all of this because literally on one hand, you have people like in the video, complaining and being a little bit prudish but at the same time that whole idea of R-rated movies was never really a thing for us because not only could we find a literally every movie on the Internet, but we can just see gore and porn at any point we wanted to bc of the internet growing up so we’re somehow desensitized but oversensitive at the same time Crazy how time flies though. The oldest of Gen Z are 27 now

MerrittJ!

You reading people’s tweets and such, makes me wish for another Plenty of Pricks.

Tyson Mindham

Speaking of that Paw Patrol joke, Twitter actually praised that kids movie for the main dog jumping over a gap. I think there’s too many ADULTS watching, dissecting, and taking children shows TOO seriously. It’s stunting people…and I’m a fan of cartoons too. I don’t make it my personality.

Cephalo

You want a really fun fact? That movie was only rated 14-A in Canada. We're a sick country!

Adam Buckley

Honestly, Gen-Z might have a point. Going to use GoT as an example... again. But, then, the last rated R movie I saw was the movie where Nic Cage finally lives his dream of being a vampire, Renfield, and that movie had was blood and gore flying everywhere with the occasional "Fuck you, Kyle" from Awkwafina.

DemonPossesser

It just goes to show how afraid of sex we still are as a society

Emma Anderson

Thanks. It is interesting to see how far TV has come, I know HBO isn't network TV but it's still something that was very popular and watched by millions via a cable subscription, it wasn't like it was an Internet-only thing in the darkest recesses of the web.

Adam Buckley

Yeah, sure, I mean a sex scene can tell us a lot about the character, what kind of person they are, and it shows us under no uncertain terms that two characters have been intimate, which may raise the stakes of a relationship or whatever (ask anyone who's slept with someone and they'll tell you it changes a relationship for sure, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse).

Adam Buckley

At first I thought "Maybe Gen Z just feels like an R rating is too much given how fuckin lame they can be. It's just some sex and some swearing, so what?" But after watching the rest of the video, it threw that idea out the window. I'm Gen Z myself and I don't really care if sex scenes are involved. Also that whole "It doesn't add anything to the story" is such bullshit. In the very least, it makes it more interesting to watch. Or it can be crucial to the plot if done right. Idk why there are such prudes but at least it doesn't seem to be a hugely popular opinion.

Emma Anderson

that GOT contrast is so fucking funny
