It's Bonus Dose Day, and I've got an unintentional theme this week... this Saturday (Friday for you!) I'm releasing Buckley vs Billboard's Top 10 Songs of 2022, and today I'm making fun of another list... in this video, we look at Rolling Stone's "Top 200 Singers of All Time" that got a lot of people's panties in a wad. Enjoy!
Rolling Stone, the magazine your dad read that became the website your dad still reads (and types the full dubya dubya dubya to get to) released its "Top 200 Singers of All Time" list. And a certain French-Canadian known for singing the Titanic theme song wasn't in the Top 10... or the Top 50... or the Top 100... or the Top 200! Buckley looks at the "controversy" surrounding Celine Dion's exclusion from the list, and once again explains that numbered lists are designed like this for a reason, and we fall for it every time.

They don't even have to try hard because like you said the rinse and repeat of this simple recipe gives them a good result every time.

2023-01-17 18:29:16 +0000 UTCA few things. One, with what Celine Dion is going through in her health and has gone through in her life and just how filthy rich she is I highly highly doubt she cares. Two we all know these are subjective list, like it is actually impossible to rank anyone in art because it’s fundamentally subjective and with the thousands of people that have been singers like how do you even judge that. Also they left off pretty much every Broadway performer who could “out sing” tons of people on that list and the mere fact they didn’t want to include opera shows that they’re just putting whoever they want. not to mention not really any gospel singers or many R&B singers that can sing their butts off. I mean KeKe Wyatt Chaka Khan Patti LuPone so many people. Or famous singers like Lara Fabian and So-hyang from other countries. Not to mention just the art of singing itself is subjective. What we determine as great singing can be highly biased towards the marketing we’ve been given because how do you compare a Mariah Carey to someone that has a more unique voice like Bernadette peters or Patti Smith to people that don’t sing like that at all and do Mongolian throat singing. You can’t say that one is objectively better than the other because it’s human creative expression (to get “deep” there haha) But lastly, none of that’s the point. Rolling Stones lists are meaningless and irrelevant. Music is fundamentally subjective and people can find what they want Nowadays so what do they have to do to stay relevant. Make the only thing that people still tune into them for which are the lists and make controversial choices or choices they know will get them clicks and eyeballs. Because for some reason people still think that they are a determination on good music when all of this stuff is biased towards white guys in rock of the 20th century in the first place
