EARLY ACCESS: Everyone's Too Fragile For The Dislike Button

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/ZBXw7qxId84

Hey everyone, it's December, and it's about 15 more sleeps until The Worst Songs of 2021! Before we get to this week's video, I just want to mention there are a couple spots in the "Signature Dose" tier open this month for anyone interested in getting a signed script. Unfortunately I can't guarantee anything gets there before Christmas (perhaps some day I will control the world's mail, but not today...) but I will certainly do my best.

In the meantime, I have two more videos to share before the big one, starting with this week's video about YouTube's change to the "Dislike" button that's got a lot of people upset. Enjoy!

YouTube decided to hide the "dislike" count on videos, meaning that when you click that thumbs down button now, the only person who will see it is the person who created the video. YouTube basically says it's to protect smaller channels from having their feelings hurt (not their exact words but... it's what they mean), but have they now hurt the feelings of a bunch of viewers? Was the dislike button too much for everyone to handle in the first place? Buckley looks at some other dislike button history on YouTube as well as what other social media companies are doing to "protect" people from other users' engagement.

EARLY ACCESS: Everyone's Too Fragile For The Dislike Button

I just use the dislike button for when something comes in my recommends that I don't want youtube to recommend to me. I think hiding it is just to let corporations save face so "new Halo trailer gets 5m dislikes" doesn't become a headline in the grist mill.

Thanks, I really tried to nail that.

I really don't remember this for some reason, obviously I've been on the site since 2009 and probably used it before that, but for some reason I can't remember the 5 star system. I guess sometimes we just dump information we don't think we'll ever need anymore.

Adam Buckley

I remember when YouTube didn’t even have the Likes and Dislikes, and instead had a 5-star system.

The absolute raw anger in the "Shut up, just shut the fuck up!" after the gladiator bit, love it.

I never used the dislike button and I will never because for starter I always look for stuff that would seem interesting based on my tastes or if I found something I'm curious about. From my part, they could remove it completely because it's easier to spot useless comments on the spot and it's encouraging people to write what they think. To be fair, I think even the like button is quite useless without actual comments to precise what people actually like and not about the video which is what actually matters.

This kinda of remains me of your Etsy post. Businesses trying to save people from buying stupid shit or stop people from being butt hurt snowflakes. If they care about the well being of their consumers, why not back more organization that combat mental and financial issues. But maybe modifying their plate forms is the best thing. What the hell do I know?

Funny thing is, you were actually right about Rewind 2018. There really was a movement that encouraged people to go on to the video solely to dislike it. It was called #TankTheRewind, and it started the year prior by a Youtuber who I used to have respect for. Granted, it did have something to do with how the Youtubers in the videos were treated, but it still seems like a wrongheaded way to stick it to the ‘Tube.

Ahhh the good old Member Berries

Well-said! I use dislike pretty much only if the video lies or misrepresents itself. If it's a video I just don't like, I watch something else.

This is certainly a possibility. Honestly, words would be more helpful (if the criticism was constructive), dislikes don't help me at all. Like, I make 10 minute videos now, what's the dislike for? All of it? Or one 30 second joke that I made that upset someone? It's of no value. Now, if YouTube included that in the metrics (when people clicked the dislike button during the video) that might help, but yeah... it's not a helpful metric. BUT yes, it may lead to more people commenting horrible stuff, BUT you can always block them or even set your channel to filter certain words.

Adam Buckley

I don't recall ever disliking a video. Usually I'll just forget about it or click away before the video ends. If anything wouldn't this lead to more "ratioing"? I imagine now what will happen is more people will comment on a video and say it sucks. At least with the dislikes, you don't always hear the people's exact words. I predict that now there will be more comments saying horrible shit to youtubers because of this.
