Bonus #88 - Gamers Are Size Queens (Extra Dose)

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/tKQWOgTyd0Y

It's Bonus Dose Day! And as promised in my recent post, this week's theme is "Video Games". I was recently asked on Discord "are you going to make a Nerd Rants 4?" and my answer was "I've basically already made it if you combine all of the geek-related Extra Doses I've done in the last year". Just this year I've released Extra Doses about DC comics and NFTs, people complaining about Animal Crossing still owing them, Nintendo suing a Go Kart company, the Anime protest in Japan, BTS fans getting mad at Garbage Pail Kids collectibles, Cinematic TV shows being too long, the Rage Reviews about WandaVision, and my video about Alex Trebek not being perfect could potentially qualify (Trivia nerds are nerds too!). So watch all of those along with today's video, and you're probably pretty close to a full length Nerd Rants! Anyway, here's the description for today's video:

Is the size of a game the most important thing to you? It certainly is to some, as gamers continuously choose to play games that have a lot to do, even if it's mostly the same thing over and over. Buckley tries to make the case for shorter games, BUT can a game be too short? An indie developer finds out the answer when players ask for refunds on Steam after beating his game before their refund window expires.

I do enjoy a good saga, but it really matters how enjoyable the game is. I enjoy passing levels and overcoming obstacles but some games run too long.

I feel bad for the dude. That 1 hour game took months to make. People are trash

Normally I'm all about quality over quantity, one of my favourite games of all time is Portal, that you can beat in a few hours, but there's one big game release that truly deserved the "it's short so it sucks" label and that's PS4's The Order 1886. You can beat it in 4 hours, it was very cutscene and 'walk and talk' heavy, the boss fights repeat and it's painfully linear so virtually zero replay value. It was sold as a full price title and was massively hyped up over 2 years and even came with a big fancy special edition with a Sackboy statue of the main character (which I keep as a reminder). It's a real shame too since it had a few things going for it, the weapons were unique, the setting was interesting and the graphics were mind blowing, but it's short length really hurt the game and inevitably the studio as well.

I feel like the phrase "short but sweet" is quite underappreciated at times.

What I'm saying here doesn't apply tot he topic of the video as I'm not a fan of shitting on indie developers, but when a game costs 40-60$ I expect to get at least 20 hours of fun from it, bonus points if I feel like replaying the game after 6 months. There's a line between being entitled to something and just expecting a good product for your money. Shitting on Dark Souls? Eh, it's not for everyone. But the way it tells the story/lore is pretty unique nowadays (smells like good old Morrowind to me, where you had to read a lot of in-game books to graps the history of the region) while being very challenging and rewarding. Even if level design in some places sucked balls. I would say it has a very good ratio of content/price, even if it's hard to get to some of that content. Although I gotta say- expecting a horror game to be long is kinda dumb, Amnesia was what, 5 hours long if you explored stuff? 40 minutes glitchless speedrun and 20 minutes with glitches if I remember correctly. And it's still often called the best horror video game ever made.

Ah gamers - stereotypes exist for a reason, and they sure do have a stereotype of being toxic, whiny, entitled man-children. Now *i know* it’s not all gamers. Hell, my best mate is a gamer. But fucking Jesus, some of the gamers I’ve met spend more time complaining about games than actually playing them.

Ash Archer

These are the type of gamers that would also say that any Mario games, animal crossing, and mobile games aren’t ‘real’ games lol
