EARLY ACCESS: Danzig: "Punk Rock Could Never Happen Today"

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/aWQx-W12F7M

Wrapping up another week with your early look at this weekend's video, and let me tell you, if you like echo effects mocking the things people said, as well as me doing the Bill Burr voice and the Patrick Warburton impression, this video is going to be a real treat for you! So let's get to it:

The founder of The Misfits and punk-rock icon Glenn Danzig recently made comments that "the Punk Rock explosion could never happen today" because people are "too woke" and you'd be "immediately cancelled". Buckley looks at Punk in the late 70s and early 80s and wonders if maybe Danzig doesn't understand what Punk is all about, and that he might have already been cancelled back before they had a word for it...

As a Cannibal Corpse fan, I can assure that fucked up music about brutal rape and killing infants is still very much being produced :)

No, that's a Metallica song, but I believe everything on Metallica's "Garage Inc/Garage Days" albums are covers. This also for some reason blows people's minds... the "Tears for Fears" version of "Mad World" is the original, not the version made for Donnie Darko. ALSO, "Tainted Love" is not originally by Soft Cell, it's a song recorded by Gloria Jones the 1960s.

Adam Buckley

Huh. I knew Last Caress as a Metallica song. It seems like I keep finding out that what I think are original songs, are actually covers. Give it to me straight doc. Is Nothing Else Matters originally by Phil Collins?

Yeah I agree, which is why I used the Dead Kennedys as an example... most of their stuff is pretty far left in a lot of ways. I will say with regards to the Misfits reunion shows, they do very well but funny enough they are all in left-leaning cities (I was going to do a thing about that but the video felt too long for it to be important). Oakland, New York, Philadelphia, and two others that I'm forgetting right now, all sold out, all in places where there's more likely to be "woke" people. Conversely, if he went to perform in Texas, Georgia, Alabama... I don't know that he'd do particularly well.

Adam Buckley

I love The Misfits in both the Glenn and Graves eras. I also ate up pretty much everything he did before Danzig IV and Samhain was pretty cool too. What Glenn neglects to remember is that punk has always had a strong left-wing contingent that would be "woke bullshit" to him based on what he said in that interview (Reagan Youth, Discharge, the entirety of the Riot Grrl scene, etc... I could go on all night but won't because most people won't give a hot fuck). His reunion shows with The Misfits always do extremely well, they either sell out or come damn close, so I can't imagine that he thinks he's not doing well or is suffering in ticket sales from the change in cultural tides. Punk is also still happening in bands that happen to be less well-known and in your local scenes. The music you want is always there if you're willing to look for it. Punk won't go away any time soon, it will just change like everything else does.

I lied in the video, I'm sad they won't let me make that show...

Adam Buckley

Thanks, I just like using them here and there to sort of mimic "ThIs KiNd Of WrItInG!", or just to add another level of sarcasm.

Adam Buckley

Nothing to do with the video but I really like the echos and other effects you’ve been using in the more recent doses! Adds a lot to the production imo.

Gabz

This is one of the best videos you’ve done in forever... and that’s saying a lot when the last few months have been one amazing video after another. Especially that Disney Plus movie pitch 😂

As a rock fan I would have to strongly disagree with his statements. I believe another type of revolution can happen in an era where the music industry is much more blatantly dominated by the 1%. Plus people are starting to get tired of bands like Maroon 5 and Imagine Dragons and for a good 7-8 years they were basically the only bands on the charts.
