EARLY ACCESS: You Don't Value Music

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/t2559JHzDGQ

It's Friday and it's time for your first look at this weekend's video! Making fun of songs is always fun, but making fun of the music industry, as well as music consumers in general is even more fun! This week's Dose is all about how we don't REALLY value music, at least not to the extent that the labels and musicians would like us to. Enjoy!

Music is something that's expected wherever you go. A restaurant, a bar, a bowling alley, a dentist's office, your friend's awful parties where he always invites that one guy you hate, but it turns out you're the guy everyone else hates... you expect music. You want it on while you work, while you clean, while you're driving. But do you want to pay what it's really "worth"? No, no you do not. Buckley explains just why Spotify and Apple's payouts are so low, and why you're likely the reason it can't or won't ever get better.

As a musician, this one hit way too true. This is why starting musicians can barely make a living. Because what used to be thousands of dollars from a few thousand fans is often now only $50-100 from streaming revenue. It’s painful to watch an industry I’m so passionate about and have been in for 15 years torn apart by people devaluing it.

I think the way I said it was "technically" correct but yes I'm sure someone will argue it.. ah well, the math is all still right in the video, Spotify pays $0.004 per stream, Apple Music pays $0.01 per stream, Spotify less than half a cent and Apple pays a penny.

Adam Buckley

Not sure if it matters - $0.004 is 0.4 cents, not 0.004 cents. I think there was a whole video of a guy arguing with his phone company about this technicality. Not that anyone but the worst of nerds will actually care.
