Bonus #53 - Inside the Bottle: The Worst Songs of 2020 - Statistics

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/2iB7BRsv7BQ

A lot of "YouTubers" are pretty guarded when it comes to some of their stats. I've never understood this, it's an all new level of vanity, like these channels that don't show their subscriber count because they're afraid they'll be compared to other channels with larger subscriber counts. Who cares? But I find stats really interesting, and since A Dose of Buckley has always operated on the premise of "I think this topic is interesting, and I'm not special, so it stands to reason other people might find this interesting too!" I wanted to share my Worst Songs of 2020 stats with you in a bonus "Inside the Bottle" video. Here's the YouTube description. Enjoy!

Buckley takes you on a deep dive of his statistics for the Worst Songs of 2020. Ever wonder if the way you consume YouTube videos is normal? These stats also give you an interesting look at overall viewer behavior, and possibly explains why your social media campaign is failing to drive viewers to your videos. Plus: a bonus rant about YouTube's lack of transparency when it comes to their own policies and decisions!

Gotta be a waste to comment on this video now but it's relevant. I'm working through bonus content I missed and I've probably been recommended the same video 20 times today. But hey, at least it's one of yours, I've just already listened to the Worlds of Power audiobook.

I started watching you in 2012, around the same time I dropped out of high school at 15. No correlation... I hope.

I'd like to manually add my own data point, since youtube's stats probably don't pick me up. Surely I'm not the only one like me. There might be as many as three others. I don't subscribe to your channel. I haven't logged into my youtube account in years. I live in the past, so I use RSS feeds. That's where I see that channels I follow put out new videos. I actually don't even use that for your videos, since I get patreon notifications. You're special like that. And then I use an alternative youtube frontend to actually watch the video, (equivalent to just downloading the video, I think) so I wouldn't be surprised if I don't even show up as a viewcount. I do watch everything, though, I subscribe here and I've even bought some merch once in a while, so there's probably a huge discrepancy between how significant a viewer youtube thinks I am, and reality. So there. Sticking it to the man by making their data inaccurate.

Thanks, I'm glad people are enjoying them. I'm trying to strike a balance with the Patreon content to "here's just some extra videos that could easily exist on my main channel but I'm giving them to Patreon subscribers as bonus content" and "here's some behind the scenes stuff I'd never do for the main channel, not because it's not good enough, but because I think it might break the flow of what I'm doing and only really engaged audience members would ever care, like, say, the ones who would subscribe to a guy's Patreon".

These inside the bottle videos are really cool. Maybe its because I'm the person who at 16 would sit around watching DVD special features but now as an adult I still love behind the scenes kinda things.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if I were to look at when they eliminated e-mail notifications and my overall views before and after and saw a decline there too. I know I used to use those e-mails as well, you'd get one every few days telling you what your subscriptions have uploaded that week or whatever, I'd see one and go "oh cool, I'll watch that". Personally, I never watch videos on my phone, so if I got an alert on my phone for a channel anyway, if I wasn't near a computer when I got it I'd possibly just forget about it for a few days unless it was a channel I really looked forward to watching.

Adam Buckley

Hmm, that would be interesting but there's nothing I can see. I can tell you that I think a lot of people just click it immediately, either way. I will make a video public and within a few minutes, it'll have a number of likes and dislikes, and it's obvious that these people haven't watched more than a few seconds. I think people are just conditioned to do it immediately, based on the title. Like "oh you're making fun of Nintendo? Dislike. Your thumbnail is the Worst Songs and it has a picture of Poppy? Dislike". Works the other way too of course, people are just like "a new Buckley video, Like!"

Adam Buckley

Since Google disabled email notifications, I had to find alternative means to know when a new video was posted. That Google did this, claimed that the reason why was because people weren't opening their emails (which is something that should bother, at least, the paying customers for gmail, about their privacy, apparently has mostly gone unnoticed or dismissed This should be a bigger deal than you think, especially for those who rely on their content being viewed by email notification. Not all of us spent every waking moment on their smart phone and YouTube, endlessly refreshing to see if a new video is up.

Hi Buckley, is there a way to determine at what point in the video viewers like or dislike the video?

Tony

Average View Durations benefiting Youtube videos is no longer the case the way it was 5-6 years ago. YouTube also puts weight on total minutes watched. Like a video that has 20,000,000 minutes watched is more likely to be recommended than a video with 2,000,000 minutes watched. Yes! I think that’s bullshit as YouTubers that rely on shorter content won’t have their videos recommended the same way they used to.

@1:50 had me chuckling

I first showed your videos to my stepson at 10 or 11 and he thought they were great. On the other hand, I don't give a shit if my kids swear as long as they use the words appropriately and in the correct context (not in school or in front of grandparents).

Loving the “Inside the Bottle” segments! Feels like the ultimate Patreon behind the scenes experience!

YAS! I've been dying for another "Inside The Bottle" segment. Hubby and I were just discussing how the 2020 video was removed from YouTube for a short time. I will share this with him. Thank you!
