EARLY ACCESS: Social Media Meltdown #7 (Feminists vs A MUG!?)

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/T11lf2rBwXg

Well, here it is! The video I was going to release two Saturdays ago has finally made it to my channel! Let's just get right to the description:

Angry women took to Twitter to let Sainsbury's know that they are NOT happy with a mug that ended up on their shelves. The mug in question features an illustration from the beloved children's book "Matilda" on one side, and a quote from the story on the other. What could be offensive about that? Buckley presents a tale of two fonts and how people looking to be offended will always find what they're looking for.

It's everything you love from my channel: me reading tweets in mocking voices, me doing bad accents, and me making fun of people overreacting to a non-issue. Enjoy!

Comments

Both The Sun and The Scottish Sun are considered bottom of the barrel dump xenophobic bullshit but everyone in the UK (except those that read them). They are owned by Rupert Murdock.

Joanna Lind

You can't make this stuff up :D. Also I don't know much about The Independent and "The Scottish Sun" but that is pretty weak and lazy journalism right there.

To be fair, you have to have a fairly high I.Q. to understand Matilda.

Gary Leigh

Hell yeah what were Sainsbury’s thinking? That hodgepodge of different typefaces in different sizes slapped together is fucking ugly.

Cogitated

well this like a textbook example on why you should never mix fonts in the same sentence when designing something. You can use bold and cursive sparingly to highlight something or signalize using sarcasm but there are very few examples of mixing fonts being done well, usually just use bigger/smaller size of the same font if you want to appear more artistic. Or colours. Still, people losing their shit over a mug is magical, it shows how much people are on edge in 2020. Even in my country people recently appear two times dumber than usual as too many people recently started to believe coronavirus is a global conspiracy or a thing blown out of the proportions (which, to be fair, it is and was the case in my country) but showing that they absolutely don't understand the root problem of the epidemic ( death toll rising when the hospitals are overrun). Also I think that there's a certain mindset that is way too common here, the "well I'm not sick and none of my friends are sick so OBVIOUSLY the whole epidemic is a goverment's propaganda trying to control our lives". True, I don't personally know anyone nearby who's sick or died because of coronavirus but I know a bunch of people abroad who lost their close ones to the epidemic. But I started to remble off topic so I'll shut up, great video as usual

If I ever lose my faith in misanthropy... I just would have to watch an episode of social media meltdown!

Anything I can do to stop people from being productive at work!

Adam Buckley

I happen to work for said company. Hilariously, concerns were raised about the mug the day it went on sale (we have a colleague social media), but then it took nearly a month for the public to make the same bewildering leap of logic. Thanks for the video btw Buckley - it helped get me through my shift

Jonathan Hay

Awesome. I kinda wanted this one to possibly have that effect, where I'd be that far into it and you'd be like "wait, WHY are they so upset!?" and then I hit you with it like 2, 3 minutes in and you're like "HOLY SHIT THESE PEOPLE ARE STUPID AS HELL!"

Adam Buckley

Another bullet point on the list of why I have so little faith in humanity.

Aveture

I do as the mug commands

Mike A.

I had to wait until you explained it in order to understand what the tweets meant. Guess I'm just that naive.
