Even an asshole can say thanks, right?

When I first decided "I'll see how this Patreon thing will go" I had some doubts (I am a cynic after all, that's why you watch me), but reaching my first goal in 12 hours was well above my expectations, considering my expectations were that I wouldn't reach it at all. But I have, and now I guess I have my work cut out for me. I've promised that if I maintain that level, you'd get a video a week again, so I'm going to work my hardest to make sure that happens. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

So, I guess I eventually have to give you guys exclusive stuff for being here, right? Well, you feel free to give me some (hopefully reasonable) ideas as to what you want. Right now it's really early, so I'm not doing any tiers, everyone will be treated equally (it's that Canadian socialist blood in me I guess). But February 1st when everyone is billed for the first time, I'm going to look at uploading the audio for a certain lost autopsy you guys haven't heard in maybe 4 years. Another thought is that since I usually finish the audio for my weekly videos a couple days before I finish the video, I might provide that for Patreon members (so you'll get to hear the audio first, then a few days later you'll see the visuals I've added to it, it's like getting to experience the whole thing from two different perspectives. Or like eating a half-finished meal and then getting to eat it when it's properly cooked later...) I mentioned a live chat idea, we could also do "Patreon Goes Postal", where you send me messages and then once a month I record myself answering some of them, and that audio is exclusive to Patreon.

Happy to hear your suggestions, obviously some of them may not be doable, but it never hurts to ask (unless you ask someone to kick you in the nuts, then it almost always hurts to ask).

Comments

Certainly appreciate the feedback. I will say that everything you may have enjoyed was also likely created on a schedule (for about 7 or 8 years I ran on a very specific schedule, uploading content at a time I'd chosen and holding myself to it). I think it works better for me, and I think it's better for people who consider themselves "perfectionists". You've possibly heard the term "perfect is the enemy of good", the idea that after a certain amount of time you're just pissing around and no one will notice or care about those last things you did, or it may even lock you into never completing a project at all because you're just waiting for that one last piece of inspiration that never comes. So ultimately, I think it works better for me to try and stick to a schedule. But that being said, I'd never put out anything that I didn't think was good, no matter what.

Adam Buckley

No idea if you will see this among the hundreds of comments, but I wanted to comment again that you "retired" at the right time on youtube, when it seemed more like work than something inspired. And despite how much I enjoyed your work over many years, I fully supported that. The result of it being a forced "have to do this every week" thing was starting to show. I guess the only thing I'd say going forward is that holding yourself to a schedule may be the best way to slip into producing mediocre content. Your best stuff seemed like it was inspired - that's the best time to produce content. I can't speak for anyone else but I think once a week is not necessary, just when you're inspired to produce something that's up to your normally very high standards, and we appreciate you coming back!

WhiteCollarRedneck

Me too!

Samantha Moes

Would it be possible for you to zip up and post the audio of every bit of content you’ve made including the bandcamp stuff, so I could binge listen from one archive? I miss the slides, so save on the file size and all that.

You are the only reason my patreon exists, enjoy my money!

I would love more Baking with Buckley, personally.

Honestly, I just use Patreon as an excuse for watch my preferred YouTube creators with an ad blocker without feeling guilty. I don't consume content via Patreon and I probably wont even check your Patreon page again unless you say to in one of your videos. Sounds like a lot of people feel the same.

Branden Lange

Basically the promise of more Buckley content is more than enough man

Yeah I’m a huge fan, who found your channel in late 2018 but have watched all of your videos a million times (do I fit a stereotype well enough yet) but fuck yeah I’ll support you here if it means more content.

So happy you’ve considered full time! Seeing you’ve uploaded always brightens my day.

Considering the size of your Patreon audience, and that you consider your overall growth to be stagnant, a Discord server might be doable as a perk. It would be unmanageable with tens of thousands of supporters, but at this level you could probably pull it off. Maybe give an hour or two per week to time on Discord. Other creators with a similar sized Patreon do this.

Saw how close the full time tier was to being met, so I had to do my part. We're almost there!

Maybe you can do raffle style giveaways of signed merch. Once (if) you do tier lists, then the higher tier patrons get more entries.

It was nice seeing the goal reached so quickly. I've been thinking about suggestions, and one I think is if you're getting tons of musical autopsy requests, you could occasionally (definitely occasionally or they'll never stop asking), do a poll on patreon, on what song people might want a video on. Not a full request, but not totally ignoring the community either.

same here!

Rocio

I'm very glad that you reached your goal so quickly. I had no doubt when I saw you reach out to us that we would all be here for you. I like the idea of getting the audio a day ahead of time.

Erica Foster

Here's an idea... if you do a video based upon a Patreon request, the requester gets credited (if they want) and the video is exclusive to Patreons for a period of time before going to the 'Tubes. Or you could just flat-out sell requests like ToddInTheShadows does - just contact him first to get an idea of how much work this is; because once you have sold you are committed, not matter how bad the idea is.

I signed up to Patreon specifically to support you. I don't care if you don't produce another video - consider it money owing in arrears. We are brothers in arms, mate. On another note, can you do a retrospective autopsy of "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits? Just (half) kidding... do what you want.

I support this

im glad to see the come back and am happy to contribute for patreon rewards id love to see patreon exclusive physical releases of content

Senpai

I’m glad to see this move to patreon. I had to hop on ASAP and throw money into this. This will be my second ever patreon sub, and I think it’ll be worth it. As for ideas from fans, maybe a regular segment involving reviewing things from your own hobbies whether it be tv, movies, games or comics? You could even poll the patrons or something to see what the want to hear about. I assume a lot of your viewers are nerdy and would like to hear your thoughts on things of the sort. Thanks for the years of great content, and hopefully it continues!

Christian Harwick

Thanks for the opportunity to support you! I know tons of people will be more than happy that you’re coming back! As far as exclusive patron stuff, I’d absolutely love a bumper sticker or something similar.

So glad you're back! An idea for a patreon thing would be to maybe make some of your visuals downloadable? A lot of them are funny and would be cool to share to facebook or something :)

am wrapped to hear things are going well buckley, i (and many many others) will be extremely glad and grateful to have you around again :)

xave vaughan

Nearly hit third tier mate, great to have you back sir. You're gonna have to do some work afterall then

Sir Of Meep

If I could eventually get a copy of Band Camp again I'd be ecstatic. An ex bf took the copy I paid for.

Richard Family

I’m on board for audio versions released before the final edit, in the past I’ve played your videos twice - once to just listen to the content and again to read the slides and not miss anything.

Cogitated

I’m so glad you may be able to start uploading weekly. Missed your grumpy voice every week or so.

Thomas J Lennex

I've been listening since the worst songs of 2010, so it's about time I coughed up a little cash. Glad to do it too, if it means you can do this full time, and kick that Adult Contemporary radio gig.

William Gelwick

Welcome, you got my monthly support.

Jennifer Tompkins

Hey man, I've been a big fan of yours for years. I'm glad you're giving this a shot, and I hope you don't get too burned out!

Thomas

I am happy to see you again and I love your content. However I don't want to see you became like so many YouTubers PLEASE if you need a break again to avoid getting burnt out do so.

TheMostEvilCookie

Just please don't stop being an asshole, it's literally your only asset....Cuckley! Nevertheless I'm glad to see you back and good luck. After the ending of your last video I thought you're done with this channel I enjoyed for so long

Welcome Back!

A change of heart from Buckley is rare. I'll take what I can get. Happy to see your videos again! Good luck!

In your newest video, I think you mentioned maybe doing "advice someone asked for" where patrons could submit questions/situations to get your input on. I really like that idea because I'm someone who loves advice podcasts and it would be great to hear your blunt perspective that is often insightful imo with some roasting when appropriate:)

Buckley, I think I have your opener. See, now you're getting paid to provide a service. You're getting paid by a lot of people, and some of them are gonna hang that over your head. So.....How about dumbasses who say things to public servants (police/Fire/EMS etc.) like "I PAY YOUR SALARY?"

I'm already a subscriber to another Patron here but I missed your content and feel 3 bones a month is worth it. I also bought your Nerd Rants the right way and so if a content producer is putting out quality stuff, you should pay to play. I'm in sir.

Samuel Ventimiglia

Happy to support you, and REALLY HAPPY to see you coming back. I've missed your content.

Well I promised to become a patreon and here I am, nice to see more people who threw a $ or two in. I threw three. Nice to have you back, hopefully doing it full time/semi full time will help you not get burned out by a 1/week schedule

Michał Michalski

Exactly, that's what I was thinking too. If he doesn't give us any 'goals' or share his expectations, he can never disappoint or feel burnt out either.

Congrats, glad it worked out

i honestly dont want weekly videos. i want a schedule where you post when you want. i dont want you to burn out and leave us again

It’s great to have you back Buckley! I started watching you in middle school, and you were one of the channels that grew up with me that never got old! Your content was always so refreshing and your sense of humor really resonated me me even then, I’m midway through college now and I still find myself watching old Buckley videos. I’m so happy you’ve decided to come back after the hiatus, you have more supporters than you think! Keep it up 🥺

Missed your videos! Don't take requests, just keep doing what you were doing, as that was obviously working, given the support you got after being on a hiatus!

Happier Uphere

Here to try and pay back for all the entertainment you've already produced. Keep it up and the rest will follow!

I'm glad you're back (sort of). Becoming a patreon was a no-brainer for me. I've always loved your content, keep doing you!

Ive loved your content for years man, I am happy to support your content. Would love. Discord man.

You've entertained the hell out of me since 2015, I can't not give a little bit back. Thanks for all the laughs, I'm looking forward to new content.

Lol i was happy to support your previous work that you posted on your site aka nerd rants and u are not special. And that was back before I even had money 😂 happy to see Buckley come out again and give us a good time.

Yongguk Is Ultimate Daddy

Idc for exclusive content. Just wanna support another entertainer ❤

Yongguk Is Ultimate Daddy

Thanks Buckley for 10 years of entertainment and for coming back! More than happy to support you in return for the laughs your content gives! Personally I think your ideas are already pretty good; I didn’t choose to become a patron for the exclusives but more to support you coming back. That being said I do believe people who are supporting you rather than happy to sit back and freeload do deserve something for their money, so the ideas you listed would be awesome!

Ash Archer

Hi Buckley, thanks for the work you have put in over the years - my wife and I thoroughly enjoy listening to your rants and content. As for a suggestion regarding content, how about a retrospective series (original, I know) on people that created one hit wonders, their initial success, why they succeeded and how they plummeted back down to earth, or have kept relevant over the years somehow (thinking Billy Ray Cyrus as an example). Would be interesting to hear your perspective on that and the social context that supported their initial success and what they are doing now, with your commentary.

Patreon Perk suggestions: First I’d like to say I love your work and am not someone who likes to push their own idea onto a creator’s work but you asked for suggestions so here we go If you’re ever debating between two or more topics for a video you could put out a poll on here that we could take part in to decide the topic of the video. You could do an ‘ask me anything’ with just audio and pre-submitted questions or you could do it all live or some combination. You could also do live streams where you angrily review random stuff. At the end of the day though, I’m contributing not for specific benefits because I’m a ‘producer’ and I wanna hold a say in what you do, but because I like the ideas YOU come up with. I listened for free since I was 12 (no wonder I turned out to be a cynic) for free. It’s my turn to give something to you so that you can be inspired again to just make whatever you like.

Emma Deschamps

Just keep doing you, sir. When you get around to advice no one asked for and scum bags of the internet, i'll be a giddy little school boy again. Until then, just glad to have a new video from you in 2020

Joe Bolz

So glad you are coming back. I’ve been watching your videos every day they have come out since 2011 or so and I’m so excited to have that part of my Sunday morning routine! Happy to hear whatever content you want to post. The only thing that peaked my interest is your mention of traveling with a carnival in your youth??? I get if you don’t want to share too much of your personal life and all but it really got me interested.

Larissa Fisher

Honestly, I'd be happy to get whatever you want to produce.

Shout outs at the end of videos would be cool too

Sheena Theo

It would be cool to get merch of some sort. Something small to start off like a keychain maybe? Eventually getting a shirt would be cool

Sheena Theo

Hard ass buckley going soft as heck...something's not right 😝

It's so weird to read when you seem so positive.

Hey Adam! Would you be interested in doing the Myers Briggs test? I reckon you might be an ESTP like me (realist). If you take it, keep in mind that the test is not always accurate and reliable, and has its flaws

Here for the angry humor, and this was the first Patreon that I've signed up for as well. A couple ideas to throw in the bucket: 1) Music Autopsies for "classic" songs that people praise, why are they good? 2) More Tales from the Carnival

your the only person who i have seen all the content for even the ones you need to buy =) so ill gladly toss some money your way

antonio kontos

Probably get back on your discord and if you have time once a week or whatever do game day where you'll play smash Bros//Mario kart // etc on stream // voice chat with patrons.

O G

I get to "produce" A Dose Of Buckley? Well his resumé was meticulously punctuated and spellchecked, so....sign me up!

Oh, I'm so glad to have you back, missed my Sunday laughs .. 👍 And Josue you beat me to it 😂

Go fuck and or fund your self. Jk glad to see you back uncle Buckley, hopefully Jason makes a comeback too

Josue guzman

Glad to hear it! I would be happy if the good ol' "advice nobody asked for" came back.

First time patron here! I’m so excited for this :) I’ve been watching since the 3rd worst songs list, but I’m excited for more content! I know you have band camp material, so maybe incorporate that into tiers? Just an idea! I’m sure whatever you put out will be good :)

Uploading the audio-only episodes as a podcast would be something I would enjoy a lot.

I'd love to see you do a "Lets Argue" segment that has been around. People make bold statements and then you either say you agree etc or tell them why their opinion sucks ass.

Kris

It's good to have you back in action! I hope this works out, I'm looking forward to seeing your content in my feed again. I don't really have any specific ideas for content at the moment, but I will say that you shouldn't feel afraid to branch out your content to avoid feeling burned out or just bored. If you want to review movies or games or whatever shit you're into, go for it! If you want to try out a new video style, do it! We love the stuff you've made, but it's the Buckley Perspective and attitude that holds it together, not the topics themselves. Either way, best of luck to you! See you soon.

Quazillionaire

Thank you for all the laughs you have given me!

We don’t want you to burn out again, but your content is entertaining and high quality, and we love it! So excited you’re back and looking forward to your next video:-)

Melissa Lewis

We're all here because we want to support you and we enjoy your content. As long as you enjoy doing it, that's all we need! Happy to help to keep you doing what you do.

Anything to help, Buckley! I just wish I could give more.

thank you buckley. i watch your videos before i go to sleep. your angry rants help me out a lot. donating a few bucks a month is the least i could do :)

After everything you did for us without pay, I'm happy to be able to contribute, friend! cant wait to hear your voice again!!

Same here. I only support two patreon accounts, and they are Buckley and Cinemasins. I can't afford much, but I split my money that I can afford evenly between both creators.

I've been freeloading on your content since elementary school (man I should have been monitored more) so now that I can actually contribute is pretty cool to me

I started watching you for the musical autopsies but I stayed for your commentary on whatever events were happening at the time. I think doing polls for autopsies would be a good start! Let your patrons pick a song every month. Honestly, you don't need to do anything special. Some creators make discord servers for their patreons, some just put them in the credits of their videos based on tier level. I personally would love to see more of the recorded albums you used to do. I bought all of them! Those would be fun rewards but I don't know how time-consuming those were.

I've been watching your videos since 2013-14, I like them so much that I watched all the videos uploaded on your channel. Feels good to have you back. "Hi" from Dominican Republic

You're the first Patreon I've pledged to! I've been watching your videos for as long as I can remember and I'm so glad this niche community you've built over the years has jumped up at the possibility of you doing this full time. You make great content and I hope this works out!!

One thing you could do is have your content you had for sale also be patron rewards. Though the people who are here probably all bought it all already.

Be back for more please

Started watching you when I was 13, I'm almost 20 now, geez It's been a long time. You finally convinced me to support somebody on patreon, and I've been hearing plees for years now. Dare I say you helped guide me as a teenager, teaching me that my opinion mattered. But enough of my sob story, glad to have you back Buck!

I'm just glad I can finally start paying you back for the content I've been enjoying since I was a teenager. Loved nerd rants and the classic podcasts on your website!

Zac Harrold

Only two things I support on Patreon: the boys at Internet Today (formerly ETC) and Buckley. These things NEED to exist.

Alexis Delgado

I might be pushing my luck with this one but I was wondering if you'd do a worst artist of the decade list, whether you rank them on how much you hate their music of them as a person is fine by me but I'd really enjoy that list of yours

Foxylover92

I've been watching you since i was like 15-16 I'm 22 now and will always be a fan of your content, and you as a creator. This is genuinely my first time paying money for somebody on this platform or really any type of platform. I am glad to have you back more than your semi-hiatus.

I have to ask, do you write a script at all? It’d be cool to see the scripts in progress.

Maybe some song requests for musical autopsies? Either free for all or votes on a poll. Other patreon channels do behind the scenes things, that could be interesting. I'm sure some people would be interested in what microphones etc. you use

Sarah Twist

How about an editing live stream?

Jenim

Could i get a pic of you filping off something?

I too would love to see content of things you actually like once in a while - the video of your axe throwing was a nice change of pace. I'd also love if some more Jason content was to appear, because that's comedy gold.

I would kind of like to see maybe a "Buckley Approves" video which would highlight songs you like/ don't think get enough recognition?

iced_molassas

- In the past, I've enjoyed watching you play video games. Maybe a raffle or something to game with someone for like an hour (mutually agreed upon game). Jackbox games are pretty cool, and can accommodate a fair number of people at a time (plus audience interaction) - AMAs are fairly popular and fun. - I also like the idea of getting to hear the content earlier. I'd be happy with that.

I've always enjoyed your "in the news" commentary the most and with so much of the world going on the handbasket there's plenty of material to work with.

Discords are pretty standard. also throw in a little patron thanks for higher payers. also id personally be interested in maybe a monthly patron podcast where you talk unscripted for an hour or so about a topic that doesnt nessesarilly fit the "dose of buckley" format. kinda like the axe throwing video

Glad to hear we've impressed you. I was surprised to see how much support you had when I checked out the Patreon page as well. I'd say start simple, and take your time to get back in the rhythm. I'm happy to see you releasing videos again, even if it's weekly or every other week. I just enjoy watching your content! You make the cynical side of me smile :)

Oh, and also. Can we actually see the progress on your goals somewhere? It showed me once when I signed up, but since then I can't find it. Is it hidden or am I just a dumdum?

I like the idea of some short non-scripted rants or something along those lines. I think using this to get content from people like with the first post works well too. The live chat idea would be cool too. Also idk bout the legal rammifications of doing this, but if it's possible access to any of the videos that youtube has taken down or blocked in certain countries would be awesome.

Yeah, I agree, a discord would probably be great.

I'd say bloopers or cut jokes/content. Maybe also a private stream where you talk to patreons/editing stream. Also could do like a "1 minute buckly" which could be your short opinion on a subject you dont wanna do a whole video for and can be nonscripted.

Keybladestrike1

"Dear Buckley..." 😂

Ashley O

Someone on your video mentioned it but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on foreign language songs. Even if you have to translate them. Even if the translation is off. That might be funny and entertaining to see how off the rails it goes.

Perseus Barahona-Molina

Could always post up the names of the patrons at the end of the video like some other YouTubers. Especially since the numbers still low for now.

I don't know how feasible this is, but I was always interested in seeing some of your rants get turned into a podcast so I could listen to them when I'm on the go

I'd love to see you talk about George Miller's transition from Filthy Frank/Pink Guy to Joji. It was abrupt to say the least if you don't know, but now he's trying to move on and be a more serious artist. It's hard to abandon an image like the ridiculous one he had though.

thefangirlotaku

There is a segment for conan called "clueless gamer". Maybe you can come up with a similar idea where you take suggestions to do something and just roll with it. Then afterwards give us your critiscism and recorded experience. I realize this is a very general idea and hard to probably work with. But i guess it's an idea none the less.

We gettin' "Bitch Better Have My Money" back?

Coby Lafreniere

I love all your videos so I am more than happy to support. Your hard work deserves to be rewarded. And I dont know how this would play out but anything interactive with you for patreons would be fun.

Discord would be awesome.

Hawke's_Harbor

I agree, would be nice to get the live interaction. Also maybe one of those stream games where the viewers can play too (for example Quiplash)

An idea for the request thing, I think that should be a tier. But with a few rules surrounding the requests. Such as a limit to how many you’d be willing to do in a given time frame and that you request something but with the rule that we cannot tell you what to say about it, and you can be free to ignore the request if it does not interest you. That way you don’t have to pander or risk cheapening what you do as you once said is a risk you take when you do requests.

Dylan Faughn

Advice columnist Buckley was pretty cool, back when you did it. Would love to see more of it, but ultimatly im happy with anything

Oshni Surugi

Buckley make whatever content you like, as long as you are posting then I'm more than happy. I've never used Patreon before, but if any content creator deserves backing, it's yourself.

All of the ideas you suggested here sound pretty neat to me. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but if something ever does occur to me, I will pass it along. :-) I am just very happy to hear from you again.

Honestly content wise whatever you want to focus on, that way it might feel less like an obligation and you might start to enjoy it again.

I second the discord option

As soon as I seen you posted a video I knew I had to pledge, I've missed your videos. I've watched everyone since I discovered you several years back. I also bought all of your CDs. Glad to support you.

Love your stuff. Now go turn on ads on your channel already. No one cares about seeing an ad when it supports their favorite creators.

Jason Rushing

I remember talking to you over discord once maybe a year ago. That was cool. One livestream for supporters on discord a month would also be cool.

We love you Buckley, we gotta support our boy
