Inspiration

I haven't practised guitar in such a long time. Until a few days ago, the last time was in January/February.

The reason was because I have not been feeling very inspired lately. I haven't been able to come up with anything new, or feel excited by any music. I was really bored of just playing metal, especially nowadays, when everything is "done"... Nothing is new anymore, and I am not learning anything new on guitar.

I come to realize it's because when we stick to genres, we stick to particular conventions. For example, how some things have to be composed in one way and you have to fit in a "box". The drums have to be a certain way, the guitars etc., this chord progression, this kind of scale/mode to create this kind of sound.

I like to make music exciting and new, but at the same time 'accessible'. You will hear me write some progressive music, but also music that you can sing along to.

I often get told that my music is 'not metal'... and that's okay. I never liked trying to make music that fits in a box. Whatever genre we are, I make music that is Esprit D'Air :)

However, I am happy to let you know that I have been playing guitar again recently. I have been feeling inspired again, and it's all thanks to my friend Yvette Young - one of my most favorite people in the world. I have been learning to play some of her songs:

Even though it's not the music I make, I love music that pushes boundaries.

When we stick to genres, we also stick to certain techniques and scales.

I want to break my usual habits.

I want to learn new techniques.

So I am going to spend the next few weeks doing just that...

In the next few days, I will be going on a roadtrip, camping in the middle of nowhere in Switzerland with my guitar and really isolate myself into learning new techniques, whilst surrounding myself in beautiful nature :) I think that's what I need for inspiration right now.
