District 14 Dispatch: The Shriek of the Union

Baldur's Gate! Bad Disney movies! Super Mario RPG! We've got lots to talk about on this bonus episode--and that's before our brainstorming session about what to add to our bonus content roster. We also chat about broader book choice ideas for the main show, and update the show description! (which I will set live soon after the episode)

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but I had a flash of inspiration the other day that His Dark Materials might be an interesting YA series to revisit!

AD Jansen

i found an extremely cursed classic shriekcast style article for the hunger games catching fire movie. The last 3 paragraphs are actually incredible https://www.mtv.com/news/0xtyjr/hunger-games-catching-fire-subway-sandwiches

I think I didn't get into BG3 until after the horn bug had been fixed because my PC got turned down by practically everyone at the party D;

Yay! Glad to hear more new stuff is coming! Very excited for more Twilight content, I agree New Moon and Eclipse all in one go! Also yes for watch content! Are we going to finish the Hunger Games series as well?

Alexa Galloway

I know it's super niche and there are lots of other probably more fun things you could do instead, but I am still dying to hear people who know about video games talk about the Gabrielle Zevin video game book. It's so bonkers!! I feel like, with stuff like Ready Player One, there might be something of a "video game lit" subgenre emerging? Maybe you can replace your quest for the legendary "good YA novel" with that other timeless question...is there a good video game book?

AD Jansen

I share the want for real time combat in isoRPGs to come back. The Pathfinder CRPGs are bad for a lot of reasons but chief among them is that they only pretend to have real time combat. Any character you're not directly controlling can only walk up to enemies and basic attack them, so even though you can 'technically' play them in real time if you're not doing a solo run you basically have to play them as turn based games anyway.

Shift

You mentioned the witcher novels and I would love a deep dive into those. If you are looking for other ya books: the Bartimaeus trilogy ha a dark haired boy wizard who gets mistreated but the magic and the themes are totally different from HP, so that could make for an interesting discussion. As a young teenager, I also really liked the inkheart series.

Lea Schmidt

It's a bit outside the standard Shriekcast wheelhouse but the Doom novels that try to adapt the plot of an iconic plotless game and eventually turn into a bizarre Mormon screed would make for good content I think

Kzinssie

begging for this

David Miller

On a more serious note. I re-read them myself recently and was very pleasantly surprised. I think they held up remarkably well. Really fun themes, characters and facts.

Geardirector

Oh man I was obsessed with these.

Bailey Harkins

Nobody ever remembers that Stephanie Meyer wrote a sci-fi book about alien body snatchers and it was kinda good. Well. It was kinda okay. Well. I don't remember it being distinctly racist at least. It was called The Host and they made a movie also. Nobody watched it.

Re: Twilight: I think Breaking Dawn chapter by chapter should work; I do suggest only doing chapter by chapter for Part 1 and Part 3, though, because Part 2 is basically one contained, batshit story, whereas Parts 1 and 3 are a new and inconsistent kind of batshit every few pages. Important to note that the genderswapped Twilight she wrote for the 10th anniversary is ALSO batshit crazy and worth an entire Sociology of Gender 301 class tbh. I agree with Liz about New Moon; I didn't find Eclipse as dull as a teen, but I also could only tell you like 3 things that happened in those hundreds of pages, so it probably depends on how much you want to talk about Peeta Paternalism 2: Werewolves vs Vampires.

XeeCee, the name of the musical trope you were referring to is a Patter Song! They....should not be the majority of the songs in any musical, from a structural standpoint. Even other structurally bad musicals usually make the OPPOSITE mistake where they try to make every song easy to turn into a pop cover for radio play, so that's WILD.

V S

this would rule

Zachary Coleman

I think you once mentioned (jokingly) a lord of the rings (re)read podcast so theres that lol

Kieren

You guys in the past mentioned Death Note which I think could rule and would be my favorite option, also maybe do Higurashi since you’ve talked about it a lot in old bonus episodes. I think both of those could also fit the unofficial 00s theme too lol. I like the idea of there being a series where you can comment on the fandom/drama/characters/etc because that’s usually my favorite part. Like all the ideas though. Also please watch that cooking video for real because that would be amazing

Zachary Coleman

i think you have the right read on the rest of the twilight books. also, i legitimately would enjoy all the joke ideas there at the end lmao

sarah

Here's a thought: I think there should be a conscious understanding of what you're reading with the expectation that the audience will be familiar with it, and what you're reading so you can go "hey look at this ridiculous thing"

Lambda

I have no watches myself but a watch talk video would be extremely funny

Dan

I think reading new moon and eclipse in one go is the ideal solution. There's enough buck wild stuff in each (that is not in the movies) to make them worth reading, but probably not enough to earn chapter by chapter. I think you could do breaking dawn chapter by chapter but it would probably benefit from a hunger games style plan where you do 2/3 at a time. Maybe that means making it fortnightly? Or alternately, it's divided into 3 chunks, so you could do each of those as its own ep. That would give you some of the twists and turns but not all of the tedium. You'd probably have a better sense of what the right call is after you read new moon/eclipse in one go though

Eve Golden Woods

I had the same thing of accidentally leading party members on when I meant the options I’d picked to be normal style

Marisa

Shriekcast Artemis Fowl!

Geardirector

i would watch the watch video.

Nora Reed

Maybe you can just watch the movies for New Moon and Eclipse.

I didn't find the room with Halsin either. I just started attacking the friendly goblins. Then when the whole goblin camp was emptied, I teleported back to the druid camp and Halsin just got there on his own after the goblin camp was empty. I'm kind of on two minds about having done that. On the one hand I seemingly progressed the story without having any story dialogue at all. On the other hand I find that really funny somehow. I started by attacking the hobgoblin from just beneath his own roof and that way I kinda cheesed through it despite being underleveled. Had no Dialogue with Minthara despite killing her and she's supposedly actually kind of a big deal for the story.
