SHHG! Episode 15: The Game
Added 2023-09-23 14:00:05 +0000 UTCCatching Fire chapters 5-6
This week we're back on our string section stuff. We play a rousing game of Classical or From Something? (it'll make sense) that spins out in some unexpected directions before getting to work on this episode's pair of chapters, which are... fine? Good, even? But one thing's for sure: the road trip movie dream is dead, and we can't help but feel a little bummed about it. On the other hand we get some great Snow menace, some Effie comic relief, and some movement in the plot that's definitely interesting even if we're unsure about the direction the story is going currently.
(Content warning for this week: Chapter 6 features a pretty mean and cynical portrayal of eating disorders. If you'd rather skip our incredulous reactions to excerpts from the text, skip 00:38:40 through 00:40:41.)

Xeecee bringing up the romantic implications of the gold pin Madge gives Katniss and the significance of the mockingjay pin is justifying my Katniss/Madge ship from nine years ago! Listening to both of you experience this series has been so much fun, and this is the icing on the cake.

2023-09-25 00:42:40 +0000 UTCCan I suggest that next time you do 7,8 and 9 as that way this section of the book is finished? I know you usually only do two chapters. And why am I only realising now that all the people in the Capital have Ancient Roman/Greek names? Effie being the exception but I am guessing that's short for Iphegenia.

2023-09-23 21:26:50 +0000 UTCthe fact that we are both big fans of both MCR and undertale/deltarune makes this moment extra classic

2023-09-23 21:26:13 +0000 UTCThe “this sounds like undertale shit” felt like a frying pan to the face because I thought the same shit moments before she said it. I also listen to MCR sometimes but not as frequently 😭 It sounds like it’s barely avoiding breaking into megalovania

2023-09-23 19:52:14 +0000 UTCman I remember the Vomit Juice being a big point of contention in my high school book club when this book first dropped. though i will say for us sheltered 14 year olds, the debate waa mostly about whether it was too Over The Top as a marker of excess rather than its weird bulimia baggage. looking back on it as an adult i really feel like it flops in every way, it just feels like a limp allusion to pop-history understanding of Roman Empire debauchery completely divorced from the ethics of the characters observing it

2023-09-23 16:37:20 +0000 UTCthis is a really good point, i feel like Fandom-as-action is prompted by an audience feeling like there's something they can Do with a piece of media, and oftentimes the easiest entry point is a flaw or like you said, leaving something on the table, (very best case scenario, alluding to a wider world with potential other stories in it) a kind of hole in the work (judgement-neutral, i dont think everything has to be 100% wrapped up to be good) is where the nerds get in

2023-09-23 16:04:55 +0000 UTCCatching Fire was my least favorite on initial read circa 2012 but became my favorite as I reread for the podcast. I think I really wanted the victory tour book, too, but knowing in advance that it wasn't gonna be that softened the blow. I think, though, that even at its best, The Hunger Games is a great illustration of what makes a work of fiction fandom-y: it has to suck at least a little, or, at least, leave interesting stuff on the table in a really noticeable way.
