SHHG! Episode 5: Ganiss and Peeniss
Added 2023-05-26 14:00:06 +0000 UTCThe Hunger Games chapters 8 & 9
The people have been crying out for more third segment content! But since we're both reading this series fresh, what can we do? This week, we find an answer (in the first segment, natch). We also discuss the final two chapters of the first act of The Hunger Games--it's good! So good, in fact, that we can't stop excitedly wondering aloud what might be in store for our heroes and villains.

2023-05-31 14:09:42 +0000 UTCI love this new segment! If you guys wanted another non-spoiler third segment, there's always the Hunger Games Simulator. You can enter 24 names and it serves you up a randomly generated Hunger Game breakdown with who dies and who wins. I imagine you guys could have a lot of fun with that!

2023-05-30 14:30:04 +0000 UTCIt's really interesting seeing people read this for the first time 15 years after it came out! A Sudden Absence of Bees hit the nail right on the head, imo-- I was eleven when the first book came out, and they started a trend that its imitators never really lived up to. I read a ton of these imitations, (IMMEDIATELY recognized Matched,) and, as a child, I even enjoyed them, but while the Hunger Games isn't a perfect series by any means, it felt like a lot of them sort of missed what made people really love them. It's also just really cool to see people read this with a knowledge of these YA tropes, because when I read this at eleven, it felt super fresh and new, and the tropes weren't really tropes yet. These books may not have been the first cool girl has to fight the evil dystopia YA novels, I'm sure they weren't, but they were pretty much the first of this specific flavor to become mainstream and huge, and they helped set the sort of blueprint for what this genre would be after. It's cool seeing how much your views and predictions for this book are shaped by the fact that you're reading this for the first time in a world full of dollar store brunette YA protags fighting an evil Society and choosing what boy to kiss. Something that felt so exciting and bold seems so much less so when you've spent fifteen years in a world trying to rip it off.

2023-05-29 16:21:33 +0000 UTCREAL QUICK since idk how often you check twitter DMs: I cancelled my subscription to Shriekcast by accident when I meant to cancel it for something else where I found out one of the creators did something horrible so I apologize for the random negative feedback that has nothing to do with you! I resubscribed immediately when I realized the error. Extremely embarrassing, my bad!

2023-05-27 20:11:42 +0000 UTCclearly the scoring is so they have something to put for one of the stats for the game’s tie in Top Trumps set!

2023-05-27 19:27:30 +0000 UTCI am hooked on this capital drama. My impression of these books was that they were better than most of the YA stuff and none of the immitators really lived up to it. It sounds to me that I got the right idea, there's a lot of juicy stuff here. Really enjoying your analyses, as always

2023-05-26 23:49:38 +0000 UTCOh yeah, sponsorship has come up but what they do is still a (interesting!) mystery. The thing that we were wondering about being mentioned at all was the scoring

2023-05-26 23:39:21 +0000 UTCI think the sponsor stuff has been mentioned earlier in the book. Page 66 in this version I found online it says "surely there must be one sponsor to take me on. With a little extra help, some food, the right weapon, why should I count myself out of the games?". Katniss directly linking sponsors to success. Peeta also makes a reference when they get to the Capitol about being nice in case people have money.

2023-05-26 16:58:15 +0000 UTCI’m gonna be real honest, they’re worth a shot purely for the sheer ridiculousness of it. Normally I’m not a “so bad it’s good” reader, but they were pretty quick reads

2023-05-26 16:30:11 +0000 UTCLOVED this episode, y'all! All the predictions are so fun and I can't wait to hear the rest. I recently reread the book to refresh my memory for your read through and I think chapter 14 or somewhere around then was when I had to pause, put the book down, and relish the idea of you reacting to it lol. We're getting so close! Also, for what it's worth, the mouth sounds in this ep were unobjectionable to me, but also I get distracted by content and can easily not be bothered by weird audio stuff if I'm invested
