Common Room S3E11: Anchors Aweigh

We sip some bevs and ponder bygone sodas of the past before checking in on Forks, WA's latest Twilight saucy quote care package. After that, we head back to the mysterious island of Rokkenjima to chat about the first half or so of Umineko's final chapter! (no strong content warning this week)

I feel very validated I am not the only weirdo who looked for old forum threads to follow along as I read. Like, when I first read the Episodes were still being released, so I followed a lot of that live. But I still had to go for threads about the Episodes I "missed" and read them along my own progress. I disagree with you regarding the importance of the mystery to Umineko, though. It depends on the person, of course, but I do think if you tell someone on episode one a bunch of bullet points about how the mystery works, it ruins the experience, to a point. It doesn't ruin Umineko as a whole because, as you said, the work is much more than just that, but the puzzlebox mystery is a big part of Umineko and, to me and a lot of people, a huge source of the fun of reading it. Trying to figure out the mystery and have your guesses confirmed or disproved is very satisfying and it can only be done once if you are on the dark. Spoil the mystery and that is gone. Again, I don't think this "ruins Umineko", because thinking the visual novel is just the mystery is reductive and misses the point. But I do think it ruins "the experience of Umineko" because I think the whole experience is a combination of this and the characters and genre exploration.

I've been playing Umineko lately and going back to these old episodes and I'm glad you talked about the "Truth" bern showed at the end of episode 7 and I also hated the truth but less because "it cant be that simple" (money + shit people makes a lot of sense for motive) and more ... it really WAS like overtly cruel to the characters. Everyone else suspected (including the truth about beato) had a long string of character motives leading up to that that, even when tragic, made sense. But Kyrie does this bizarre cruel pivot to her character; we knew she had issues with Asumu, Battler & jealousy but there's quite a leap from that to Kyrie out here going "yeah i'll nonchalantly kill 4/5ths of the island. Be useful for once in your life, Rudolf. If you cant convicne Battler he'll be a pain so make sure to kill him. Oh rudolf died? Yeah he's always pretty useless. Well fuck ange she's nothing to me, jsut a pawn". Thankfully they didnt stick to it, but in the moment I would have preferred it just being Rudolf or Eva just from the extra nuance they brought to his murders.
