Hourglass court cards: skeleton king and poll.
Added 2022-07-19 16:00:10 +0000 UTCI've been struggling a bit to figure out what the third court card should be for the hourglass suit. I've previously shown off a Jack depicting an executioner and a King depicting death.
Ben Mdm had an idea that I really loved whereby the courts cards suggested the story of a deposed king: jack would be the executioner, the queen would become the death card, and the king would be a skeleton.
Here are some early variations I'm working on for the skeleton king (I still need to split the forearm into the radius and Ulna bones):

Also as a bonus, I plan to make a skull item for anyone creating their own cards with the MultiDeck Maker assets.
I'm still working on the art for the skeleton king, so I don't want to get to ahead of myself, but I do have a potential concern: I'm worried the detail is a bit high for the skeleton compared to the other court cards in the deck and that it may not mesh as well. For example, all of the other court cards only subtly hint at facial features and are otherwise pretty abstracted. The skeleton on the other hand has eye holes, a nose hole, and teeth. Removing too many features however, makes it stop looking like a skeleton. Maybe I'm too concerned though. Let me know what you think.
Before I start to really refine the court cards though, I wanted to get a poll of the direction to head in.
Here are the three options I'm thinking about:
1. The deposed king set: Executioner Jack, Death Queen, Skeleton King.
This is basically the current direction things are moving as outlined above. As a reminder here are the rough versions of the executioner and death cards:

2. Three Skeletons +Death: Skeleton Jack, Queen, King, and an extra court card for death.
Despite my concerns from above, I do like the look of the skeleton king so I could see making all three court cards look similar. I think I would still want a death card, but it could be an extra court.
