Label Lid & Diamond Grid Lid Betas
Added 2021-07-31 21:00:03 +0000 UTCAn issue with Singularity Boxes is that once the lid is on they can be a bit of a black box in terms of knowing what is contained.
If you print them in black PLA, they can literally and figuratively be a black box of mystery:

Spurred on by a follower on Twitter I decided to try to brainstorm a few solutions. Also in case you didn't know, you can follow me on Twitter @SingularityDeck.
The first idea is the fairly simple: create a lid with a spot for a label:
This lid has a small inset for a label. Of course you could always write on the boxes or slap a label on it as is, but having the inset means that the label wont get easily scraped off. It also looks much nicer.
The disadvantage of this design is that the label inset requires support material to print (something I try to avoid as much as possible when designing for 3D printing). It may be possible that a well tuned printer can bridge the gap without supports, but I haven't been brave enough to try. I'm still testing a few things and working on making each of the different lid sizes. The size of label inset is based around a label I happened to have laying around. If you think there is a good 'default' label size, let me know.
The second idea was to create a lid that lets a bit of light into the box so you can see what's in there:
It's not a perfect solution but it does help and looks pretty cool:
The biggest disadvantage is of course that super small components could fall out, but the holes are small enough that for nearly all games it shouldn't be an issue.
