More concept art for Feathers and Flowers! I figured it'd make my life so much easier if I had some environmental concepts to look at when I write, if only so I have continuity and not like, have to guess the framework of important locations every time I use them in the story. owo So, here's the first of a few environment sketches I hope to work on, this one featuring Kaela's farm!
Man-made structure isn't my strongsuit, but I think I'm rather pleased with the overall outcome. I worried myself more on the concept and not so much perspective and such, and it really helped, so I think I'll be approaching future concept sketches of environments in such a way! :)
In any rate, the sketches in question for anyone curious!
1. Depicts the location of the tram stop Kaela goes to in order to get to the town. The idea behind the country itself is that it's far more reliant on public transportation than personal ones, so people owning their own cars is very uncommon and a sign of wealth. Instead, the average joe relies on the public transportation system, which is far more intricate and reliable due to their civilizations built around said system. This specific trolley connects one of the rural areas to the city, and has only two trams that go back and forth. Kaela is the farthest from this particular stop and has to walk around 30 minutes to get from her house to it.
2. This sketch just shows the view of Kaela's farm from far away, as if you were coming from the tram station. A huge perk to Kaela's far walk is that it's very scenic, completely surrounded by nature, wilderness, and the odd farmstead. While the dirt roads leading to her house is popular because it connects to a hiking trail, not a lot of folks are seen, so it's relatively peaceful. Kaela's nearest neighbor is around 3 miles away, so she's often the only one to use her particular tram stop regularly.
3. Super rough concept of the layout of her farm. The first one I did too! It was mostly to figure out the overall landscape and how nature surrounded it, but I also wanted it to be somewhat immersed in the landscape, so it was built over the little shallow river that runs through the valley.
4. The second and possibly final pass of Kaela's house, overhead view. Did this one to fully hash out some things and to give me an idea of how it sits. It helps me better visualize the place in a 3D space, which I used to sketch out the front and back views of the house in that second page :)
The second page, as said, depicts the front and back of her house! It's technically two stories, with the living room and kitchen downstairs and the master bedroom upstairs in a tiny loft area. The large space that sits above the living room is actually storage, but can also be used as a room if needed, which is exactly what Mal and Kaela do; Kaela converts it into a living space for Mal because it's roomy and allows direct access outside via the balcony, which Mal more often uses to get into the house than the front or side doors. That purple mass there with white dots is Mal's "bed", but it's more accurate to call it her nest. It's of a whole bunch of blankets and pillows, since there's really no mattress large enough to actually comfortably fit her. Mal actually prefers this though; soft mattresses are uncomfortable to her.
Given the general size of her home, Kaela doesn't have a couch and instead has a coffee table with a built-in blanky and a bunch of floor-chairs. and that white mass near the house is the shed! Kaela keeps some of her flowers in there, but she also uses it for general storage, such as her bike. owo
And uuuuuuuuhhhh yeah! Got a little long-winded, and I hope ya'll don't mind the slight shift in content so far! I've been hard at work with Feathers and Flowers and at this rate I'll finally be able to start actually writing! You all will get some artwork of the splash art/title card for one of the chapters soon so keep those peepers open! In the meantime feel free to ask questions if ya have any uwu
