1.「あまり不真面目だと怒るよ？」

深夜までゲームをしてしまい、眠くて仕方がない。仕事に支障を出すわけにはいかないと必死に業務をこなしていたが、つい、あくびが漏れた瞬間を、いちばん気づかれたくない相手に見られてしまった。

「あまり不真面目だと、怒るよ？」

「すみません……」

拳を握りしめてこちらを睨む先輩は迫力にあふれていて、とても言い返す気になれない。

プライベートでの姿との別人ぶりを知っている身からすると、正直、感心してしまう。

2.「休憩も必要ですよね？」

おしとやかでいつも優しい三歳年上の自慢の彼女。文武両道で隙がないように見えるが、付き合ってからわかった深刻な欠点がある。

今日は俺の家で試験勉強をすることになった。30分ほどは真面目に取り組んでいたが、彼女はそわそわし始め、落ち着かなくなってきた。

ついに我慢できなくなったのか、彼女はペンを置いて膝立ちになり、こちらを見た。

「休憩も必要ですよね？」

少しは効果があるかと思い、距離を置いて勉強していたが、やはり駄目だったか……。

こうなってしまったら、もう止まらないだろう。

3.「先に寝ちゃいますね」

二人でサークルの飲み会を抜け出した。互いに大学デビューを目指してリア充サークルに所属したものの、どうにも馴染めない。陰キャ同士というのは、なぜか互いにそれと気づけるもので、周りについていけずおろおろしていた彼女が目を泳がせていると、急にぱちっと俺に視線を合わせ、近寄ってきた。そのまま細々と会話をして、気づけば二人で外に飛び出していた。カラオケに行って、酒を飲み直して、互いにマイナーなアニソンを歌って……。夢のように楽しい時間だった。

終電を逃し、駅前のビジネスホテルに泊まることになった。俺は漫画喫茶でもよかったのだが、彼女にも同じことをさせるのは不安だった。下心を感じさせないよう徹底的に紳士に振る舞うと、最初は緊張していた彼女も安心したのか、うつらうつらと体が揺れ始めた。

「すみません……私、先に寝ちゃいますね」

「ああ……うん」

彼女はふらふらとベッドに向かい、ぱたんと倒れると、あっという間に寝息を立て始めた。

……寝ている姿を見守るくらいなら、許されるはずだ。

1. "If you keep slacking off, I'm going to get angry, you know?"

I stayed up gaming until late at night, and now I'm unbearably sleepy. I was desperately trying to get my work done without letting it affect my performance, but the moment I let slip a yawn, the one person I least wanted to notice caught me.

"I'm sorry..."

My senior, clenching her fists and glaring at me, radiates such intensity that I can't even think of talking back.

Knowing how completely different she is in private, I honestly can't help but be impressed.

2. "We need breaks too, right?"

My wonderful girlfriend, three years my senior, who's always graceful and kind. She excels at everything and seems flawless, but there's one serious flaw I've discovered since we started dating.

Today we decided to study for exams at my place. She focused seriously for about 30 minutes, but then she started fidgeting and couldn't settle down.

Unable to hold back any longer, she put down her pen, got on her knees, and looked at me.

"We need breaks too, right?"

I thought keeping some distance while studying might help, but it was no use after all...

3. "I'm going to sleep first, okay?"

The two of us slipped away from the club drinking party. We'd both joined a popular social circle hoping to reinvent ourselves in college, but just couldn't fit in. Fellow introverts somehow always recognize each other, and when she was floundering, unable to keep up with everyone else, her eyes darting around nervously, they suddenly locked onto mine and she came over. We started chatting quietly, and before we knew it, we'd escaped outside together. We went to karaoke, had more drinks, sang obscure anime songs to each other... It was a dreamlike, wonderful time.

We missed the last train and ended up staying at a business hotel near the station. I would've been fine with a manga cafe, but I felt uneasy about making her do the same. When I acted like a perfect gentleman to avoid giving off any ulterior motives, she relaxed from her initial nervousness and started swaying drowsily.

"Sorry... I'm going to sleep first, okay?"

"Ah... yeah"

She stumbled toward the bed, collapsed onto it, and in no time was breathing peacefully in her sleep.

...Surely it's okay to just watch over her as she sleeps.
