1.目のやり場に困る

親族の集まりで五年ぶりに会った子は、すっかり大人になっていた。昔はあんなに懐いてくれていたのに、今回はまったく話しかけてくれない。 集まりのあと、その子をたいそう可愛がっていたうちの両親が「ぜひ家に」と誘い、彼女もついて来たものの、表情が乏しくて何を考えているのか分からない。ここまで静かなのは、もううんざりしているのかもしれない。

自分たちが連れて来たくせに、親戚に話し忘れていた用事があると言って両親は外出し、二人きりになってしまった。沈黙が本当に辛い。いっそ嫌われてもいいから、話しかけてみるか……。

2.「和室は好きだよ」

サークルの飲み会で話が弾んだ先輩が、二次会でうちに来ることになった。これまであまり話したことはなかったが、互いの趣味が読書で、愛読書まで同じだと分かり、いくら話しても話題が尽きなかった。

あまりの楽しさと酔いでうっかり忘れていたが、うちは築四十年のぼろい和室賃貸だ。先輩が不快な思いをしていないか心配になる。

「あの……すいません……こんなぼろい家なのに誘っちゃって……」

先輩は何を言ってるの？という顔をしたあと、くすくす笑った。

「汚部屋ならともかく、ちゃんと片付いてるでしょ？　それに和室も好きだよ」

「そうなんですか？」

「うん。和室で本を読んでいると、なんかすごい風情があるというか……うまく言えないけど、満たされるんだ」

「うーん……実家もアパートも和室の俺には分からない感覚ですね……」

おっとりした少し変わり者の先輩は、お世辞ではなく本当に快適そうにしていた。これまでは酒の勢いで後悔することばかりだったが、今回は初めて正解を引いた気がする。さっそく飲み直しながら読書でもしようか。

3.「ごめん・・・少し寝るね」

あれだけ昨夜「ゲームをやりすぎないで寝ろ」と言ったのに、彼女は夜更かししたせいで今日一日中眠そうにしていた。そして、とうとう限界が来たようだ。

「ごめん…少し寝るね」

夕方に寝てしまうとまた深夜まで起きていそうだが、「寝るな」とも言いづらい。この時間に寝ても生活リズムを整えるには、適度な疲労を与えるのがいちばんだ。となると・・・あれしかないな。

1. I Don’t Know Where to Look

At a family gathering, the child I hadn’t seen in five years had already grown into an adult. She used to cling to me, yet this time she didn’t speak to me at all.

After the party, my parents—who had always doted on her—insisted she come over to our place, and she agreed, but her expression was so flat I couldn’t tell what she was thinking. She’s so quiet I’m starting to wonder if she’s already had enough of us.

Even though they were the ones who brought her, my parents suddenly remembered an errand they’d “forgotten to mention” to the relatives and went out, leaving just the two of us. The silence is excruciating. Maybe I should try talking to her… even if it means she ends up hating me.

2. “I Like Tatami Rooms”

At the club drinking party, a lively chat with an upperclassman led to him coming to my place for the after-party. We’d barely talked before, yet we discovered we both love reading—and even share the same favorite books—so the conversation never ran dry.

In all the excitement and alcohol I’d forgotten my place is a shabby forty-year-old rental with tatami floors. I start worrying he might be uncomfortable.

“Um… sorry… for inviting you to such a rundown place…”

He gave me a look that said, What are you talking about? and chuckled.

“It’s not like it’s a pigsty—it’s tidy, isn’t it? Besides, I like tatami rooms.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. When I read in a washitsu, there’s this special atmosphere… I can’t explain it well, but it makes me feel content.”

“Hmm… I guess I can’t relate, since both my parents’ house and this apartment have tatami rooms…”

My gentle, slightly quirky senpai truly looked at ease, not just being polite. Until now alcohol-fueled invitations had always ended in regret, but this time it feels like I finally made the right choice. Maybe we should pour another drink and read a bit.

3. “Sorry… I’m Going to Nap for a Bit.”

Even though I told her last night, “Stop gaming and go to bed,” she stayed up and has looked sleepy all day. It seems she’s finally reached her limit.

“Sorry… I’m going to nap for a bit.”

If she falls asleep in the early evening, she’ll probably be awake past midnight again, but it’s hard to tell her not to sleep. To get her rhythm back even if she naps now, giving her just the right amount of fatigue is best. Which means… there’s only one thing to do.
