1.「お邪魔しまーす・・・」

会社の後輩が、ついに俺の家へ来る。

彼女が入社してから二年。ひと目惚れした俺は、どうにか仲良くなろうとあれこれ頑張ったものの、大人しく控えめな性格ゆえ、関係はなかなか進まなかった。

迷惑か、怖がられているのではと悩んでいたが、そんな最中にも彼女のほうからおどおどしつつ食事に誘われたりしたので、少なくとも嫌われてはいないと確信できた。とはいえ彼女はとにかく自分に自信がなく、プライベートで会うたびに「私なんかと過ごして楽しいんですか」といったようなことを不安そうに尋ねてくる。

先日、馴染みの居酒屋で飲んだとき、酔った勢いで「今度うち来る？」と口走ってしまった。彼女は警戒心が強いタイプで、一度不信感を抱かれたら二度と取り戻せない――そう思っていた俺は、ずっと踏み込んだ誘いを避けてきたのに。失言に気づいた瞬間、酔いが一瞬で覚め、顔面が青ざめる。冗談だと言い直そうとした刹那、彼女が小さく答えた。

「……いいですよ」

「え？」

信じられずに見つめると、彼女は真っ赤になって俯いた。

「え……これ……冗談ですか……？」

「……いや、違うよ。じゃあ、土曜はどう？」

「はい……空けておきますね」

予想外すぎる展開に驚きつつも、心の中では飛び跳ねるほど嬉しかった。強気に誘ったほうがよかったのかも――そんなことを今さら考えても仕方ない。せっかく来てくれる彼女がくつろげるように、全力で準備しよう。

2.「どうしよっかなぁ…」

財布を忘れて家に取りに戻ったせいで、デートの時間はとっくに過ぎていた。 謝罪のメッセージを送っても既読さえつかず、息を切らしながら必死に走る。

待ち合わせ場所には、感情をそぎ落としたような無表情の彼女が立っていた。 怒鳴ってくれた方がどれだけ楽か――血の気が引く。

「ごめん……財布を取りに戻ってて……」

「…………」

沈黙の視線。 こういうときの彼女は、こちらの言葉を待っている。

「ほんとにごめん……。なんでも言うこと聞くから……」

その瞬間、彼女の眉がかすかに動き、 わざとらしく両手の人差し指を合わせるお決まりの仕草。

「どうしよっかなぁ……」

遊ばれている――そう気づいても指摘はできない。 逆らえば今度こそ本気で怒らせてしまう。

今日は彼女の言うことを聞いて、なんとか許してもらおう……。

3.「居心地いい部屋じゃん」

住めば都とばかりに、こだわりゼロの部屋で二十四年間生きてきた。 けれど転職でテレワークが始まった途端、殺風景さが急に堪え、インテリア熱が一気に爆発した。 まずはソファを買い、次に壁紙を張り替えた。間接照明まで導入し、どうせならと観葉植物も置いた。 試行錯誤の末、ようやく「他人に見られても恥ずかしくない部屋」になった……気がする。

成果を見てもらおうと、大学時代に仲の良かった先輩に久しぶりに連絡を取り、「家飲みでもどうですか？」と誘った。 当時は月に何度も集まり、内容ゼロの雑談で夜更かしした仲だ。以前の荒れ部屋を知る先輩なら、ビフォーアフターの感想もくれるはずだ。

数年ぶりに会った先輩は、驚くほどそのまま。体形も髪型も大学時代と寸分違わず、時間が巻き戻ったみたいだ。

「おお……ずいぶんオシャレになったじゃん」

部屋を見回し、ダイニングチェアに腰かけたりソファを試したりする先輩を見て、胸をなで下ろす。少なくとも独りよがりなセンスではないらしい。

「居心地いいな。このふかふかソファでさっそく飲もうぜ」

浮かれた先輩につられ、俺も上機嫌で隣に腰を下ろす。今日はここぞとばかりにインテリア自慢を聞いてもらおう。くだらない話でも笑ってくれた先輩なら、きっと嫌がらず付き合ってくれる。

1. “Excuse me for intruding…”

A junior colleague from the office is finally coming to my place.

It’s been two years since she joined the company. I fell for her at first sight and did everything I could to get closer, yet her quiet, reserved nature kept our relationship from progressing.

I often worried I was bothering her—or even scaring her—but now and then she shyly asked me out for a meal, so at least I knew she didn’t hate me. Still, she has almost no confidence; every time we meet in private she anxiously asks, “Are you really enjoying spending time with someone like me?”

The other night, drinking at our usual izakaya, I blurted out—beer-bold—“Want to come over to my place next time?” She’s the cautious type: lose her trust once and it’s gone forever. I’d always held back from that kind of step. The instant I realized what I’d said, the booze evaporated and my face went white. I was about to laugh it off as a joke when she quietly answered,

“…All right.”

“Huh?”

Staring in disbelief, I saw her flush bright red and look down.

“Uh… was that… a joke…?”

“…No, it wasn’t. How about Saturday?”

“Okay… I’ll keep it open.”

Shocked by the unexpected turn, I was leaping for joy inside. Maybe I should’ve taken the initiative sooner—but there’s no point thinking about that now. Since she’s going to the trouble of coming over, I’ll get everything ready so she can truly relax.

2. “Hmmm, what should I do with you…”

Because I forgot my wallet and had to dash home for it, the date time was long past.

Even after I fired off an apology message, it hadn’t even been read. I sprinted, lungs burning.

At the meeting spot she stood motionless, face blank, all emotion pared away.

If she’d shouted, it would have been easier—my blood ran cold.

“Sorry… I had to go back for my wallet…”

“……….”

Silent stare.

When she’s like this, she’s waiting for me to keep talking.

“I’m really sorry… I’ll do whatever you say…”

Her eyebrows twitched the tiniest bit,

and she deliberately pressed her index fingers together in that classic pose.

“Hmmm, what should I do…”

I knew she was teasing me, but I couldn’t call her on it.

Push back now and I might really make her mad.

Today I’ll do exactly what she says and somehow earn her forgiveness…

3. “Nice, cozy room you’ve got.”

For twenty-four years I lived in a no-frills apartment, telling myself, “A man can live anywhere.”

Then remote work kicked in at my new job, and the bareness suddenly got to me—my interior-decorating impulse exploded.

Sofa first, then fresh wallpaper. Indirect lighting installed, and while I was at it, a few houseplants, too.

After trial and error, I finally felt I’d created “a room I wouldn’t be ashamed to show anyone”… or so I hoped.

Wanting a verdict, I contacted a senior from university I’d been close to and invited him over for drinks. Back then we met up several times a month, staying up late with content-free chatter. He knew my old wreck of an apartment, so he could give me a true before-and-after.

Seeing him for the first time in years, I was amazed—same build, same haircut, exactly like back in college, as if time had rewound.

“Whoa… you’ve made the place pretty stylish.”

Watching him look around, sit in the dining chair, try the sofa, I breathed easier. At least my taste wasn’t totally self-indulgent.

“Comfy. Let’s crack a drink on this fluffy sofa right now.”

Caught up in his excitement, I sat down beside him in high spirits. Tonight I’ll brag about every interior upgrade I made. He always laughed at my dumb stories back then; I’m sure he’ll indulge me again.
