On the subject of Lynch potentially going full on into John Carpenter style pulp, I think a great example of what that could've been was his Dune adaptation. Still recognizably Lynch, but he's also more overtly in touch with creature feature aesthetics in a way that wouldn't fully come back until...something you two will watch relatively soon, heh.
