Comic Feedback!

Hello everyone!

Today I'd like to ask for some feedback on comics. ^^

Making full-color comics is quite the undertaking.

I made a full color comic with everyone's favorite magical phox girl before!

It's right here, now updated to include all pages!

Unfortunately, it does not seem to be very popular. For the amount of effort it took to complete I'm not so sure it was worth the time to make.

I'm currently plugging away on my Annie comic. Here's a cropped preview of the first two pages so you can see the level of detail I'm going for:

I worry it's too much effort for not that much interest in return. The Braix comic did not do well on any site I posted it on, in fact I couldn't even get much interest when I gave all the FullRes files away for free. I have sketches on Twitter that are so much more popular~

I get the impression the more complicated something is, the less interest. A sexual piece of art with a big, juicy booty in your face attracts attention due to how immediate and easy to consume it is. A comic takes effort to read and click through, even if it's only 3 pages.

I believe my strengths are in illustrations with multiple versions. Those seem to do very well. Sketches do pretty well, too.

I'm quite sure I could make 2-3 illustrations in the same time it takes to make one of these comics.

What do you prefer to see? Do you want to see larger projects like full color, multi-page comics? Have I just not tried them out enough to know if they will be popular?

Is it better to just focus on telling a story with different versions of an illustration? Maybe one page comics?

Thank you for any feedback!

I want to make sure I can produce timely, interesting content!

Cool!. Good luck dude.

Annie loves ass destruction! I notice the more sexy a design is intended to be, the less interest there can be. Sometimes I see people flat out hate sexy designs (like Camilla from Fire Emblem). Salazzle and Primarina don't get enough love. The ear-hair fox wizard? We all love lewding that! Looks like I'll be doing more sketches to see what people like!

Annie is Goddamn adorable, so I'm more than ready to see her cute ass get violated! If there's one thing I've learned about furries, it's that they can be unpredictable. Take Poke'mon for example. The most popular 'mon for adult artwork seem pretty straight forward, yet in later generations Gamefreak is literally handing the post potential to them on a silver platter!... Yet interest fizzles out almost immediately (Primarina being a perfect example) You really just have to throw stuff out and see how people react. Gotta hit the right mark at the right time, but there is no way of knowing what that mark is. It's a crap shoot, but it's a worthwhile one!

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely prioritize the art over the flow. I'll finish a small Renamon comic and my other big painting in the next few days and then put the rest of my time up to October 5th into the Annie comic. I'll try to incorporate all the advice here into it to the best of my abilities! Sketch comics to get movement and ideas out may be the best move. Don't expect a deep story or amazing dialogue with my Annie comic. Expect tentacles and jokes, ha ha~ I do follow other comic artists, like Meesh. I want to get work done within a month so maybe I should focus on simplifying comic presentation. More space around panels so they are clearer, instead of "arty". I do have ideas for comics with Annie and the Mirror Goat, like an origin story and showing their love for each other. I'm probably not quite ready for comics yet... XD I have some studying to do! I looked up Fred Perry. Maybe I should try more monotone or balck/white comics, like inked pages.

I'd agree with the others that maybe some more sketchy comics would be a good idea, not just for getting them out faster but it'd also allow you more practice too. While the art in the braixen comic is really nice and well done, the subject matter itself was basically just a joke about her panties being on fire, more funny then sexy atleast to me. I'd also say that comics tend to be a bit more fluid in movement then what you drew?. I think comics can do very well, just look at doujins for example, and i'd argue that comics can actually help immerse the audience more in the situation too!. but maybe try to study those who've done them successfully as well to get a better idea of what people are after, I really like Fred Perry's comics(the one with froppy is lovely) for example.

owo-b Here is to hoping everything goes great~

True. ^^

Yep, one comic is not really enough to judge. I want to have more flexibility when drawing, which comics allow for. I can make more unique poses and facial expressions, but they have to be something that gets positive feedback. I know my full paintings work well or I wouldn't have much support! Time to test the waters and see how things go! If people like the art for the Annie comic, I'd love to expand and make some comics that build characters up~

CatCouch

Patreon is quite well set up for comics now that they allow multiple posts so if people here like them enough, that's all that matters!

CatCouch

Good advice! I wanted to make sure I wasn't on the wrong track before devoting too much time to comics. I get mixed messages when it comes to making characters more anthro. Sometimes making them more human-like seems to be popular and other times I'm blindsided with unexpected popularity of more accurate look. That Vaporeon with anal beads sketch is one of my most popular Twitter posts! Weird. Testing the water is a good idea. I should try some sketch comics to get an idea of what people like before devoting serious time to an unknown. It's always nice when some small thing I drew is well received, giving me motivation to expand. I'll finish up this Annie comic and see how it goes for now. It's just a dumb tentacles thing with nerdy humor.

CatCouch

Very sad when you think about it, isn't it? =( Well, I know I love them. ^^ Just do what works best for you, CC. =)

I'm gonna echo everyone here and say that I personally love your comic and think that ultimately you need to stick to what you think is best for your art. On the note of your previous comic, I actually have a thought on that. I think it make be because Braixen wasn't anthropomorphosized enough. She looked exactly like the Pokemon, but had visible bits. She's cute and I enjoyed the hell out of it, but when I see comics online they tend to be much more heavily anthropomorphosized and I think that is something that people would want. I'd also recommend that if you want to test the water, do some simple multi page sketch comics. Try different ones with different ideas and see what does best. Eventually you'll find something that will stick. If what sticks is something that'd you'd enjoy doing frequently, then you can take the ones(s) that do and full color them. Form there do things like that to keep people interested, and periodically try different things here and there. If you'd don't go balls to the wall every time you make a comic it will be much less of an undertaking if it doesn't sell well. Then when one does you go all out on it and blow their minds!

Justin Daniels

Yeah, I do see the issue in regards to the time investment if you feel your comics aren't doing so hot. However, judging it all from how one comic went might be a bit too narrow of a sample pool. I suppose seeing how the annie comic goes you will get a bit better feedback on things perhaps. But in the end, you gotta do what you feel is best for you and find a way to do things that suits you ^^

Zhet

The Braix comic did poorly enough that it makes the time investment for comics a difficult to be confident in. My Annie comic is a bit bigger which may make it even harder to post online. I worry comics just take too much effort to read and don't fit in very well with how art sites and social media display art these days (many sites don't even allow multiple images in a post). It seems instant gratification and easy share-ability matter the most.

CatCouch

It's a bit easier to make a single page comic more coherent. I definitely don't want my art quality to suffer with comics but that can also backfire if they come off as too busy. There's a lot for me to learn here!

CatCouch

I think comics could be of great value to me but they could also take up time that could go towards more illustrations. I want to be able to finish a comic within a month while doing other illustrations. I notice most comic artists do a few pages a month while I try to wrap my art up in complete, monthly packages. These two things are hard to make work together, ha ha~

CatCouch

Have to agree on doing what works best for you, CC. ^^ I personally loved the multi-page comics but do what you think is best. =3

M2

I agree with Zhet on doing what you feel is best. The only thing i noticed with the longer comic was it had alot going on in each page. It had a different feel from the single page comics if that makes sense.

Cold_Leaf_Soup

I'd personalty say do what you feel is best for you x3 If you feel that comics are too much effort to be worth it, maybe that is just the case ^^ However, I personally enjoy longer comics more than I do single illustrations, but even so comics can be very hit or miss I suppose. That to say I am more of the kind of guy that enjoys a short little story over instant action. Not that I dislike either, I love them both, just one slightly more than the other x,D
