AFD Mode 2019

Prereleeeeeeeease!!!! Now a normal prerelease I'd be doing a good bit before the public one, but this time is a bit different since it's got a very specific deadline (4/1!) and I spent longer on it than I maybe should have :P

This release includes a bunch of fixes and tweaks, but most importantly I spent several days this week building a new AFD mode, which alone added 752 lines of code, a +0.6% increase in the core Cogmind code base.

I haven't written the release notes yet (those won't be coming out until 4/1 along with all the announcements), so you'll be going into this blind, but you'll probably catch on pretty quickly ;)

On Steam, Beta 8.1 is located on the new branch "kyzratipatron," or if you don't have Steam and need the DRM-free prerelease, send me an email.

If you don't want to change your system time in order to access the special 4/1 content, I've added another way to access it, by using the "-forceAFD2019" command line parameter (in Steam this is Cogmind > Properties > Set Launch Options...). Note this isn't required if you just want to play regular 8.1 instead, as this version does include a number of Exiles-related tweaks, but the main cool feature is AFD 2019, which is a whole new way to experience Cogmind :D

In either case, old saves are not compatible.

Enjoy!

Note: For Wizards I'll be updating the wizard key and introducing some of the new wizard mode features after it's officially released on 4/1.

It's true I tend to repeatedly insist on outdoing myself, a habit I have to work against lest it kill me at some point :P. At least, I'm getting better at it though, a little...

Oh, honestly I've had a feeling that you're a type of requiring yourself to work more than last time. That said, Cogmind darkside edition would be continuously worthful not only as pure enjoying but also as semi-wizard mode for little experiments.

Indeed! I've built the mode into the game so it will continue to be accessible in all future versions :)

Kyzrati

So the command line option will be always available? : pp

Johnson Lin

Well... did you read the post? xD

Kyzrati

Is there any possible way that we can play this mode outside of 4/1 ? :P

It got kinda out of hand. Last year's AFD was literally done in an hour on that morning (not even planned in advance--just a sudden thing for fun), but this time, as I feared, I ended up putting perhaps too much time into it. But I dunno, maybe it'll be worth it. I played through most of a test run myself and it seemed to be pretty fun :D We'll see what everyone thinks soon! I've gotta spend much of today writing the release announcements and a whole bunch of other news updates that have piled up...

Kyzrati

Once understanding what is happening I cracked up. So clever and well-prepared thing! But I save remaining words for steam release 4/1. And I seemed to peek 8.1 content just a bit, love it.

Well Cogmind's core, anyway, but that excludes a number of things. I occasionally check the full LoC, maybe once a year, but I have no idea what the full count is right now. It's probably around 135k-ish? I do like using events to explore fun new features, but not really for content that will come to the regular game. Note that although from the player's POV it would seem like the Exiles came after the Christmas event, the entire Exiles design and all of the related items and mechanics were already completed in early December (much of that work was done in November, actually), so the Christmas event was actually inspired by the Exiles :P

Kyzrati

Ahaa, so Cogmind is 125K lines of code! Interesting, interesting.. :D Whatever it is you're doing with timed events, I feel like it's an opportunity for you to try something crazy/unbalanced and then maybe realize that sometimes it's more fun than unbalanced and hence is worth adding to the core game. I feel like it's kinda what happened with exiles that grew from christmas event that just added stuff that was hands down fun.
