stairway, my take: E (as V) with an Am but just not playing all the notes. It feels "suspended"

Jessica Margolin

I always assumed that the avoidance of parallel fifths and octaves is that in Mozart days you always wanted to have independent voices, parallel thirds always sound like thirds - two notes, but in parallel octaves and fifths, it's like one of the pair seems to be subsumed into the other one, resulting in voices that aren't independent, like one was a simply a harmonic of the other. I think I remember that Mozart actually wrote a parallel fifth once, but I think he did it when he was just a youngster.
