I thought the same! I did not expect Arriety in the bottom 2, but in the lipsync I did prefer Lydia. Lydia was relaxed, grooving with the song from the start, whereas Arriety started slow and gave desperate.

2025-02-02 21:20:18 +0000 UTCI would say Sam deserved that bottom spot over Arrietty..Sam was also one note, but none of her jokes landed unlock Arrietty who was at least funny. & her runway was better..but I think Lydia won that lipsync, she embodied the song and Arrietty was just doing a lot (I’m tired of the queens doing that windmill move) lol

Lesbians are almost always having sex with each other or whatever when they’re shown on drag race. It’s low hanging fruit. Doesn’t seem all that different from what straight men would come up with if they were writing a skit about lesbians. They can only imagine lesbians in relation to themselves. (I.e. lesbians as they would appear in multiples in a porno to perform for men and validate/amplify men’s prowess. “Women are mirrors that reflect man back to himself at twice his natural size.” Or whatever that Virginia Wolff quote is that I just mangled!) However…all of this is performed by gay men/non binary people/trans women (not sure how everyone here identifies in terms of sexuality) who are dressed as women. So that complicates things. Makes my head hurt to parse out! But ultimately, it lets me give the writers a little room and the benefit of the doubt. I think there are plenty of other ways that lesbians are funny. It’s very different from the way drag kings use their performances to critique the male gaze and problematize masculinity. They often act like macho buffoons. And I think that’s why they are excluded from drag race. Drag kings often use drag to criticize masculinity/patriarchy whereas the drag queens here (filtered through production/editing) value hegemonic masculinity and pursue it (e.g the pit crew all similar body types, the rejection of femininity/other queens as sexually desirable (sister dick, although there are exceptions this season), and the definition of”trade” as ultra masculine men.) Maybe if they had more lesbian guest judges and writers we might see different (and more clever!) representations of lesbians in the show. (Sorry for the long overly wordy response! I’m a sociology professor who studies/teaches about gender. Can’t help myself!)
