Curb Your Enthusiasm 2x09 'The Baptism' Full Length Reaction

Comments

Curb did a lot of improv style in the first few seasons and it becomes more scripted later on. Another thing too in my view, is that its sort of an exaggerated portrayl of the attitude of the wealthy social circles of West Los Angeles/Hollywood industry types of that time. People get very upset about every little thing, rapport is easily broken, people throw fits and blow a gasket and so on. Larry is sort of being larry and is known as successful and quite wealthy compared to many. He feels like he doesn't have to play the game, so he is always ruffling feathers not going along with the crowd, yet end up having to try and fix things.

Seinfeld has similar ideas to Curb, but it has snapper and more rhythmic dialogue that is more suited to the average attention span and that’s why it had such mass appeal. Curb, especially in these earlier seasons, takes a more dry and naturalistic approach and it can be an adjustment if you’re not used to that sort of thing. I still suggest sticking with it. You might adjust and the show does become a bit more bouncy, and the writing just keeps getting funnier as the seasons go on.

Two reasons. 1, The script in Curb is very loose, the cast follows an outline but the details are improvised. 2. the show has Larry's brand of humor (which is prevalent in Seinfeld) regarding mundane observations and faux pas. Seinfeld considered itself to be 'a show about nothing' and Curb is the same way. Both shows don't appeal to a lot of people which is fine, but IMO if you're into Always Sunny which I'm sure a lot of you are, you're a lot closer to 'getting' the humor than most other people

who me

It took me a couple of times to get into Seinfeld back when it was running. It gets better the more you watch it because you get the characters mannerisms and quirks and both shows are meant to be awkward, but I think curb even more so.

Hey, I'm a massive Seinfeld fan...and a Curb Fan too. It's nice to hear feedback from the 'other side'. I grew up in a family of four and only three of us thought Seinfeld was hilarious, the other 'just didn't get it' . We still quote little remarks to this day. We all share the same humor for 99% of comedy though. I, myself, hated broccoli. Now I can't get enough of it! Maybe it's a Nature/Nurture type deal? Hope you give it another shot though, I haven't seen Curb in Years. So perhaps I will take notice of the clunky useless dialogue now that you mention it. 🥦😊😉

why would a grown man who can't swim get a baptism in a lake 😭

just not for you i guess, I haven't seen seinfeld either but this show clicked for me quick. I like the natural (improvised?) style of dialogue and Larry is charismatic enough to carry it on his own imo

i feel this. i've never been able to get into curb. i've never seen seinfeld either and every time i try to watch curb i just feel like i don't get it. like there's a joke im missing.

context; never seen a Seinfeld episode. and I don't mean any ill intent towards anyone, dean or hendo. is the dialogue in this show supposed to feel clunky and sometimes useless? maybe I'm not getting something with curb? but it feels like some of the episodes drag and should not be hitting the 25+ minute mark. again, no ill intent, I am just trying to get into the show as it's brand new to me.
