Mac annoys the shit out of me now. Rob totally ruined that character

I honestly feel like the series doesn’t gets back on track until half way through next season in my opinion

For a long time I wondered if they knew they were writing a character who was definitely on the spectrum with Mac. Maybe you're right and Rob's personality informed some of it.

watching this series back i realize this has been an on-going issue with mac as a character. he goes from extremes. even back in season 1. one episode he could be going off about something, quoting the bible, then his religion doesn't get brought up for episodes or even seasons. he's into physical fitness and thinks he's an action star? episodes and even seasons before that's brought up again. the sheriff of paddies? the ocular patdowns? brought up and then not mentioned again for episodes or even seasons. i feel like all the other characters have a solid identity and journey. part of me wonders if rob's own life carries over a bit into the writing. he found out very recently he's neurodivergent and was undiagnosed. i have adhd and am on the spectrum and i know one major thing is we try to copy and mimic and mask and fit in. especially if there's someone we admire (take dennis in this example). i have to wonder if a lot of the issue with mac as a character comes from some of the personal stuff rob has dealt with - like feeling out of place, trying to copy someone he admires, and fit in, trying on different personas. i have to wonder if that carries over even unconsciously into how mac has been written since the start.

I don't think it's Rob not wanting to portray Mac as a POS, but more them deciding that Mac no longer knows who he is. Is he Catholic? Is he Gay? Is he Irish? Is he a beef cake? lol. He's struggling with who he is, and I think in this episode they're trying to say he's thrown his identity into Dennis and whatever Dennis wants him to be, because Mac doesn't know and can't figure it out. It's a bit much in this episode, but that's what I think they're going for. Could be wrong though.

I personally really enjoy this episode. The opening is one of my favorite bits. I do think the Mac stuff is a bit too strong and leans too much into him being clingy to Dennis. They've had that before, like when they "break up" or when they move to the suburbs and are basically an angry married couple, but it is a bit much in this one. I think it ties into the overarching narrative for Mac the last few seasons where he's struggling with who he is. He literally has no idea who he is at this point in time, so he just clings to Dennis to choose everything for him. It's not great, but I see what they're going for and it works sometimes better than others.

I feel like this is a problem with Mac that shows up last season. As good as the dance is, I feel like "Mac finds his Pride" was a turning point in Rob not wanting to portray Mac as the pos he was for a dozen seasons. So instead he goes from being needy and annoying one episode to caring too much about his identity the next to making Charlie look like Einstein. Kind of a big reason why I dislike that episode so much. Not to mention how difficult it is for me to care about a touching moment happening to any member of the gang after 13 years of rooting against them because they are terrible human beings.

You guys picked up my main criticism of this episode and a lot of the later seasons. Everyone kind of feels like they maintain the same personality except Mac. I feel like he changes from episode to episode for no explained reason.

yeah i like this one overall but frank's thing with the waiter doesn't really go anywhere interesting and mac does get annoying. some great dennis lines in this one though.
