You nailed it. He is now my least favorite character by far.

While he's usually nobody's favorite character, Mac's personality is really important to the mix. The funniest things about Mac were his delusions of being a bad-ass (and trying to portray himself as one), and then his denial of his sexuality. He served as a great side kick for Dennis's alpha leadership. He was the Robin to Dennis's Batman. Now, he's Dennis's simp/gimp, and it's just not funny.

I'll echo both sentiments. Yes, Mac does change, which is perfectly normal, all of the characters have changed and evolved and become more extreme versions of certain characters, Dee used to be more of the voice of reason and has become more spiteful, Frank wasn't nearly as dimwitted in earlier seasons, Dennis has gotten more psychotic, Charlie dumber, lol.
Mac's performance here is particularly different (and quite frankly his acting is particularly bad, but he's always been the weakest actor in the group), but I think going forward he comes back towards that typical version of himself that we've seen, just more extreme. He's still the guy who struggles with his identity (faith, sexuality, some other items i don't want to mention as they get highlighted in season 15 i believe) and how they are at odds. That goes back a loooooot of seasons and continues going forward. It's just he's actually accepted he's gay, and that was a source of so much angst and comedy for his character.
I do think fit Mac is less interesting, but I can't hold it against Rob that he wants to be in shape and healthy as he gets older.

Yea I recall thinking originally it was a gag to allude to a future episode, but than finding out later the network just aired them differently than they had originally intended. For some reason they wanted to move the superbowl episodes towards the end of the season. Not sure why but it does cause a lot of confusion on first watch of the Boggs Reboot episode.

Look, I know I'm outnumbered here by the sheer number of you guys who hate the later seasons. I just wanted to offer a different perspective--a more positive one--especially since Dean and Hendo actually seemed to enjoy almost this entire season. Which is significant because during the build-up to this season, I saw so many comments from you guys assuming they would hate it. I know I'm in the minority in this particular Patreon for enjoying these later episodes, and I'm running the risk of you guys calling me dumb and naive because of that. I just don't want negativity about these episodes/seasons to be the only thing these guys see in these comments.

If you remember in the Ladies Boggs Reboot, the Waiter is the flight attendant and he mentions waiting on them in the Super Bowl last year. It was a set up for here.

He never gets back to normal, at all.
The Mac after he gets buff is completely incompatible with the Mac before. They are entirely different characters.

You guys also cut the credits off to early it shows a shot of Mac/Dee/Frank at the game in real life. Also the clips of the games were actual clips of the super bowl. I also agree Mac changed a lot ever since he got in shape.

i disagree, his character sucks for the rest of the series with a few exceptions here and there imo
i know it's superficial but a good part of it is all the work caitlyn and rob got done. they look like supermodels, mac with a body he obtained with a hollywood trainer. they're supposed to be low life scumfucks from south philly who hang out all day in a bar. fat mac was best mac

This episode is bad but the ending being actual shots of Philly fans when they won is still great. Rob/Mac is about as hardcore Philly as you can get and you know winning the superbowl was everything to him.

Yes, they won that year against Tom Brady no less!

Yeah, Mac's personality in this two-parter is just a one-off that I personally just write off as due to him being such a hardcore Philly sports fan. He's pretty much back to normal after this, imo, so I wouldn't worry.

Mac/Rob's overacting here just kills the episode for me. they bring back the side characters but they don't do much to help. the waitress has become pretty annoying ever since sleeping with charlie lol
i was born in philly and sure the ending is a bit touching, and it was clever how they tied their storyline into the actual game. but the actual episode how its written and acted probably makes my bottom 5
