September Grab Bag of Mystery: Fixing Broken Movie Sequels

Each month, you get a random piece of exclusive bonus content as a thank you for supporting us on Patreon. September's Grab Bag of Mystery perk is fixing broken movie sequels. After Jono’s brilliant idea to fix Anakin and Padmé’s relationship, they had the idea to discuss famously problematic movie sequels that could be fixed with just a few tweaks.

The sequels:

Jurassic World Dominion

Spider-Man 3

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The Matrix Revolutions

Thor: Love and Thunder

Please do more fixing movie episodes!! (not just sequels!)

Cristina

I love that use of Skywalker. Seems fitting.

Alan Seawright

ooh, very good!

Alan Seawright

We need to re make this type of version of Star Wars Rise of Skywalker happen!!

Marcus Miller

That would make Reylo SO much better.

I know I’m late, but more of these please!!! Loved it!!

Honestly just fix the last jedi. Spend the second movie, setting up the third movie. The fact that the third movie in a trilogy is introducing giant concepts is wild. Snoke should've died at the beginning of rise of Skywalker, Palpatine should've been hinted at or teased in last jedi. The force healing should've been introduced in last jedi. Also hot take but part of Ben Solo's redemption should've been falling in love with Rey and sacrificing himself to bring her back from the dark side when she starts to fall herself. One of the biggest themes in the original trilogy is the optimism. Luke was right to redeem vader. There's still hope for good in evil people.

Your ideas for fixing these movies are so good that I'm even angrier at how much the actual movies suck now lol. I especially like how you 'fixed' The Rise of Skywalker, The Matrix Revolutions (Alan nailed the core reason that film didn't work), and Jurassic World Dominion. If they did the Jurassic film how Jono laid out, I honestly think it would have the potential to be one of the best films ever. It takes the underlying themes of the original film that made it so iconic and fully realizes them in a horror-ridden, ethical nightmare—mind you, a delightfully fun, adventurey, sci-fi one. Ugh that would've been so good. Please do more of these ❤️

I loved this. Something I would like to see (but it does not need to be fixed) is a look at the short "The Only Girl In The Orchestra ". The film makes a point that not everyone needs (or wants) to aspire to leadership. It is possible to have a rewarding life by serving. This point is not made (or appreciated) enough in American life. A team need goalies, an orchestra needs bass players and fourth horn players. Not everyone can be president, quarterback, or concertmaster, nor should they be.

More of these!! 🙌

Love all the ideas and I would do see all those movies!!!

I vote next years CT Studios movie is your version of Star Wars!!

Drug Princess

I came up with a rewrite for Thor: Love and Thunder where the Grandmaster and the Collector are supporting villains kind of hopping on Gorr’s bandwagon and helping him to save their own skins, thereby making the Guardians’ continued presence in the movie feel even more justified. Star-Lord would also be thematically very important, since he 1) lost a mother to cancer, tying him into Jane’s arc, and 2) had the power of a god and gave it up, proving Gorr wrong.

Luke

I must admit I quite like those goats not that the gag would be that funny but I like that little wink on actual Norse mythology :D like Odin having eightlegged horse in first one. I would remove sandman from spiderman I'm not saying he was bad, but he was least important imho. I agree with removing Peter hitting MJ and keeping him as emo bad boy. Personally it was only moment where I really loved Maguire's portrayal of Peter, mostly he was a bit too weird for me but this dark side Spiderman was pretty great. I felt like Neo becoming part of matrix is kind of what happened or was kind of implied to maybe happen at the end? I absolutely agree with Dominion. I'd push back a bit on Star Wars. The point of ending of last jedi was that Luke realised he was wrong and unwise, he says that to Yoda and one of his last lines is "I will not be the last jedi". I don't think point of prequels was jedi were wrong, Lucas said several times Anakin fell to the dark side because he failed to follow jedi teachings and rules. Jedi weren't flawless but most of stuff they are blamed for either isn't their fault or isn't really something where they had much choice and their rules were pretty logical considering mythology of the world. I'd really keep Ben redemption arc, it was one of my favourite moments and my favourite storyline through trilogy. My version of rise of skywalker would be a bit different but with some very similar aspects. Finn would absolutely become one of military leaders of the rebellion (I'd probably skip a bit more time between movies to make all characters a bit more seasoned in last episode. I'd absolutely love him leading rebellion of stormtroopers and freeing those being brainwashed. I'd quite like him having one final confrontation with Phasma I was quite sure she'll come back because falling to disappear in flames with no body and partly uncovered face means you'll come back in next episode with partially burned face maybe even as scary cyborg, I felt quite cheated that she didn't come back. I'd like them having fight each other but more as strategists than physicaly with finn's troops seemingly falling into her trap for him to find some smart way to counter it. I'd keep original intention of him already showing some signs of force sensitivity and I'd either keep him without romance (as jedi should be) or with Rose, not that I wouldn't prefer romance with Poe but that would have to be in last jedi. It felt quite weird that Rise of skywalker acted like whole romance with Rose never happened. I'd quite like if Kylo and Rey switched, she would fall to the dark side and he would be redeemed by her and try to save her in return. There were some strong implications of darkness within her and her inability to resist it and I'd like to see more of that having consequences. My theory was that Snoke's spirit survived in Kylo (because he was the one who bridged his mind with Rey so there had to be connection with him as well), Snoke would slowly start to take over his mind and body to become more powerful. Rey would slowly show some sign of the dark side taking over but at one heroic moment she would take over Snoke's essence into her mind and save Kylo while being overcome by Snoke herself (because she's connected with them as well). Redeemed kylo would then fight dark side rey while simultaneosly inside her mind lightside rey would fight snoke. It would probably need one more movie but who said there only ever have to be trilogies? I would only let force ghosts appear to kylo after he'd redeem himself because it seems that seeing force ghosts isn't that easy even if you want to see them. The moment he'd be redeemed at the end of first of my two movies would be moment when he'd finally see Anakin. I'd probably keep force healing storyline in some form I really liked that giving you life for other part. I'd also keep Hux same but I'd make him less comic relief and give him some more sinister moments like at least executing some civilists very much in bad batch crosshair scene style. Damn I made this way too long and congrats to anyone able to read it :D

BlackAdder

Totally agree.

Andrea Kiss

I would absolutely watch that Star Wars movie! And the name Rey has for the new order is... The Skywalkers. They're sort of Grey Jedi oriented, but take the name Skywalkers. The family that included both Vader and Luke: blending the Force rather than keeping light and dark separate. That makes "Rey Skywalker" make sense: that's how all of the new order people name themselves when they graduate. There's still the question of Rey's parents. As long as it's not Palpatine, meh, whatever.

Larry Garfield

Uuuugh, I want that Star Wars movie!!!! 😭😭😭😭

How to fix Rise of Skywalker: make Duel of the Fates instead.

Michael Siegel

I completely agree with the Jurassic World Dominion ideas. Completely glossing over everything to do with dinosaurs spreading around the world without check is the largest travesty of the entire series.

Ben Sheppard

I will die on this hill. Timothy. Zahn. Thrawn. Trilogy. If it had to be done in the 2010s, I would’ve accepted Clone Wars style animation, with all the original actors doing voice work.

Wayward Ace

"Maybe we don't need to keep killing female characters." SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!

SaucyJTB

I have not watched this yet but Thor Love and Thunder would be greatly improved by getting rid of the screaming goats.

Nancyjane Bailey

I think I now need to see "The Rise of Skywalker: comedy-horror version" where it's all Luke, Anakin, and Yoda's force ghosts haunting Kylo Ren for the whole movie, lol

Kendra Jucksch

Legend has it that Jono is still sleeping soundly. (At least I hope he got a good night’s rest!)

Oooo! Interesting topic! Before I watch, I'll pitch the Spiderman 3 fix I've been touting for ages now: Split up the movie. Have Spiderman 3 purely focus on Venom bringing out the worst in Peter magnified over his guilt around his feud Harry Osborn. You can still have the split with MJ, having him "kill" Sandman but be given extra time to give Sandman more pathos and sympathy. And make all of these actions irrefutably his fault. The movie can end with Peter finally realising what its turned him into and the symbioate landing on Eddie Brock, essentially a cliffhanger for the next film. Then Spiderman 4 can be much clearer in its overall message of Peter trying to redeem himself for his Venom-induced actions which would thematically tie into him having to face the consequences of his two worst actions: Killing Sandman and ruining Eddie Brock's life. Overall, I'd likely also eliminate the whole "amnesia" deal; having him instead knock Harry into a coma and have that guilt push him to mess up the other stuff. Harry can still do his bit via dream sequences in the 4th movie and be told about his father's glider while recovering. Basically, I think that pause between movies would allow for better pacing on each story, plus it would add a lot more weight to everything "evil Peter" does knowing that it doesn't immediately get fixed 20-30 minutes later. Sandman's death, for example, would be so much more impactful if Spiderman 3 ended with him still "dead" and us, the audience, having to live with that for a while (think of the year between Infinity War and Endgame as a modern example)
