Always Sunny 13x06 'The Gang Solves the Bathroom Problem' Full Length Reaction

oh god that makes a lot of sense lol NPR = nice polite republicans. they support US imperialism and corporatism but in a softer version than conservative news and they mix in liberal culture issues to make them seem left. basically same thing with MSNBC and CNN, new york times etc...to me the real biting satire is a few layers underneath were the writers were at with these episodes. i also think some people misunderstand what i mean with woke. nowadays its become co-opted and its a top-down means of distracting from economics or neverending war with identity issues. sunny has broached these topics in the past - "do you want a republican or democrat blasting your ass?", or the israeli guy saying their bar is on his land. but the NPR thing makes a lot of sense

it's hard to condense my thoughts on the topic in less than 5 huge paragraphs lol but yea all political nonsense aside, it's hard to remain fresh for 16+ seasons. and i do think influence of hollywood is a factor. caitlyn and rob look like supermodels now not running a shitty bar in south philly, that automatically makes them less funny. more attractive but out of place for their characters. it will always be my favorite show and even with all my complaints that annoy or perplex most of you, i'm still rewatching this episode. and every episode like 100 times lol

I was very sick of the topic by the time this came out. As a Texan, I had to deal with this dumb controversy where people claimed a bill saying you can't discriminate based on sexuality would allow men to flood women's bathrooms. Every time I turned on the radio I had to hear this commercial with some angry woman talking about men in women's bathrooms. The bill in question had nothing whatsoever to do with bathrooms. It was so gd dumb. Them not seeming to know what to do with the episode didn't help, either. Some of their best episodes are contained in the bar, but they have more to go off of. A trial over cereal, a chicken scam for Charlie to hide, or Frank looking for his will while the rest of the gang is held hostage. In this one they literally just sit around and talk about bathrooms. There isn't any funny way they are approaching it or solid side story to intermingle with, so it gets old. I agree with you that another story would help. You could condense the entire episode into 5 minutes and have a funny side story for Dee in a different episode, but there just isn't much here. As a side note, I hate Jimmy Buffet. When I think of his music I think of tourist traps and old people with bad taste. So the weak Buffett concert subplot didn't do anything for me.

I don't agree with everything here, but I agree the dialog stops feeling as natural from this point on. I won't spoil things, but the newest season really felt that way at times. Despite having some insane laugh out loud moments, it felt so much less natural than early seasons. Even the bloopers from the last few seasons aren't that funny. There's so much less improv than there used to be.

People complaining about always sunny becoming political or forcing social commentary clearly haven't paid attention to the show's entire history.

A lot of people have issues with the episode. I don't think it is woke or overly social like some complaints say. I think they just didn't attack it at a funny angle. One thing Rob has said is that a lot of episodes were inspired by listening to NPR then trying to make the gang wrong about it in opposing ways. Gun Fever Still Too Hot is the best example of that. They parrot left/right views, then approach it in insane ways and flip flop after having issues that were entirely their own fault. I think this episode is more Glenn not being there to help write the season than it becoming too social or political. It has been that way since the beginning.

Also I think on the whole the show suffers a little when they only have one storyline going. Usually there's a B plot somewhere, but in this one it's only about this and they don't have the B plot to kind of break it up a little.

Charlie's...."Dee....we were just talking." gets me every time. It's by far the best delivered line in the entire episode.

Jay Willis

Correct. It's always been this way. And they almost always go at it from both sides to point out the hypocrisies and ridiculousness of the extreme viewpoints from all angles. Some people hate this episode because the topic itself makes them uncomfortable or they are exhausted from the conversation and just don't want to deal with it. Which I get. That's fine. There are also legitimate issues with the episode. For me it felt like an idea they had in the writer's room and just never quite landed how to flesh it out. There's some good ideas, some really good jokes, some good points, but it's just not executed as well as other topics. Overall, I think it's actually a pretty solid episode, though I don't fault people who feel it's on the weaker side or just doesn't work for them personally.

I’ve been to a Buffett concert and the tailgating prior to the concert is indeed a wild, fun experience 🦜🍹

And Dennis' hat. It's really all I could focus on.

left and right are false tribal identities amplified by intel agencies and the media to divide the working class. there are culturally conservative communists (traditionally that's actually most of them) and ultra liberal capitalists and a whole host of divisive culture war issues that people who identify left or right are on both sides! and what is considered left or right is also flipping when convenient by those manipulating us for those who take part in this circus, i can understand wanting to identify the show as left and the whole point to be shitting on social conservatives. strengthening ego and tribal identity. i'm not denying that was always a part of it, and rob obviously likes to take his jabs at christianity, but that's too reductive, they were always a little more clever than just left > right. like south park they always at least tried to poke a little fun at everyone. these later episodes feel like they're written to please one tribe over another rather than just mock the human condition in all its forms. it feels like they've been in hollywood too long. and that's just my take from a lifelong gay commie who's always identified as left until i realized it was a scam. shitting on social conservatives is such low hanging fruit these days. a good deal of comedy is about punching up and exposing the powerful and these last few years i think a lot of people have let us down in that regard. but i honestly do find just the banter back n forth and the vibe to feel forced even when they're not discussing anything political. not always but here and there. compared to seasons 1 - 9 i always felt like i was just watching friends organically talk or yell at each other

Russian Paul

Yeah I don't think Season 1 is " Terrible " I just like it the least. Also the show is political, but I like how they can find funny things about both stances most of the time...

This was a decent episode but i was distracted by Mac’s shiny shirt

nothing about the show has really changed, just the world around it. same reason they used the R word liberally in early seasons and know better now. maybe the dialogue is heavy handed at times but theyve always been very firmly left so don't act like that's new either lol.

that's how i feel. they've always been political. the first episodes had to do with some very heavy things. but yeah season 1 isn't my favorite. it's kind of like the office (the us version). it feels like it doesn't hit its stride until a while further into the series but then when it does it's great. i think danny/frank was what the show needed. watching episodes without him his presence is very missed. this season isn't a favorite of mine either but to me it's not absolutely terrible like many portray it to be. it's still got it's good moments!

i'm in my 30s though to be fair and was raised on buffet lol my parents listened to him all the time back in the 90s. even outside of my parents buffet was super big in the 90s. he was always on the radio and going to events and stuff his music was always playing lol there was no escape!

emily ღ

Kind of what the show is about tho? It seems like almost half their episodes are about social commentary and poking some fun at it. I mean 3-4 of their 5 first episodes of the series were about pretty big issues. Granted this episode is a little more heavy handed than most. After thinking about it I think this season is prob my 2nd or 3rd least favorite season about tied with season 2 and ahead of season 1... I noticed that I never really have the urge to watch season 1 episodes unless someone is reacting to them.

Katzchen1984

i really disliked this episode first time i saw it and still not a fan. feels like social commentary superseding comedy, like they just wanted to insert this cultural topic into an episode but it feels forced. just the energy of the gang is off, when mac gets mad it just feels like a schtick, the gang isn't organically bouncing dialogue off each other. at least that's my perception. and the Jimmy Buffet stuff was a weird choice, no offense to his fans, its just hard to believe the gang has all been going to Buffet concerts for decades average age at his shows is like 70 lol

Russian Paul

i love how they genuinely cannot grasp that buffet did not sing the pina colada song

Justin Mercier

hey now, that girl on the boat was of age. he stole her license and checked! nothing shady there.
