Saying Hello

Hey everyone, just stopping by to say hello. I'm still here! Also, I'm sorry things have been quiet. I'm still waiting for my visa to be approved but if everything goes to plan, then I should be moving to France in a week.

I'm still working hard on my latest project. It will be I think a little under 50 minutes long and will be a large-scale piece on Iran. I'm hoping to release it within the next 10 days.

How is everyone feeling coming out of the election? I've been resisting the urge to make content on it, since it puts me on this sort of treadmill of constantly reacting to American politics, rather than actively pursuing my own subjects, but it's an undeniably important moment in American history that certainly does deserve time, attention, reflection, work.

Hey Ryan. I just found your videos on youtube this week and fell in love with your channel. I find myself thinking about the information you present throughout the day while I'm at work. This evening I decided to join your patreon to support what you do because I find it very valuable. So thank you for that! I just watched your life update video, I hope your move goes well. As someone who learned a new language as an adult I think you will find it very rewarding in ways you could not have imagined. Anyway just wanted to make a comment and say good luck on your move! The Iran video was the first one I saw and it was fantastic. Thanks again!

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I might actually take you up on it and quickly cover Zionism next. I want to cover Israel/Palestine at some point but am not sure when or what the angle will be.

Ryan Chapman

Dear Ryan, with a little delay I want to send my best wishes for your move to France and that you may maybe meet the love of your life there! / I love all your videos but best the one comparing Western and Chinese philosophy, as I have been to China several times and will be there again coming year for longer. Gave me good insight!/ Should you not know the German/ French tv channel ARTE, I want to highly recommend it. You can also practice French language there. A couple of months I watched a great series about the resistance of women (and their supportive men) in Iran. https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/RC-024305/iran-le-soulevement-des-femmes/There are a number of documentaries about Iran and other great ones too! My most favorite on ARTE, that I watched multiple times is this one > https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/RC-014177/une-espece-a-part/ And I love the film „Women without Men“ by Shirin Neshat! Good luck! I for one would love to hear your thoughts about the recent American election. No sense in pretending it isn’t hugely significant for the world.

Brian Shallcross

New member here! I've enjoyed your videos this far and I wonder if you'd consider making a video or series about Zionism or Israel/Palestine. I'm on the left side of the political spectrum, but since October 7th and the war in Gaza, I've felt lost politically. In my opinion, many people on the left don't have an understanding about the different types of zionism and why so many Jews consider themselves Zionists. It's been rough seeing/hearing leftist discourse with people who think they have a clear understanding of the conflict, but they regurgitate terms from social media like apartheid, genocide, etc. without doing their research.

Aja Nichole

I believe your timely focus on Iran will be an important contribution to what is, after all, global understanding. I hope that time in France will provide opportunities for dialog and perspective. I wonder what you will learn, and look forward to what you share.

I think it is wise to wait before writing about this election until after January. There is too much mythology about what Trump will / won't do, and I think any statement ahead of time is just going to be rebutted by people who simply believe in what they want to. I have studying intensely the impact that Neo Maraxism (being a recent marriage of political postmodernism with critical theory, social justice theory, and poststructuralism) has had on our culture. Its destructive narration and existentialist foundation have resorted the two big political parties. Neoconservatives are leaving the Republicans and returning to the Democrat Party where the ideology technically originated, and Classic Liberals are leaving the Democrats and returning to the Republican Party where the ideology technically originated. This correction is extremely interesting, given that it took a very unconventional, flawed and extremely expressive (from the Merrill-Reid standpoint) presidential candidate to make that happen. But it continues to interest me why there are many intelligent people still unwittingly trying to resist it, mainly because of hatred. I am reminded of murmurations that go wrong, like a flock of birds that slams into the ground to evade an imagined predator, killing them; or a herd of lemmings or sheep running off of a cliff in panic.

Ahh, swami, we are predicting the future now, are we?

Please don't chase trends. I'd rather see a thoughtful video on the election from you in two years than a hot take right now.

I am with you that the Democratic Party needs quite an overhaul in the way they manage their leadership and set the direction of their party politics. In this sense, this serious debacle will hopefully instigate proper soul searching. Still, cannot quite go as far as saying that 'the lesser of the two evils' won, considering the character of the person, and the ideas behind him. I feel many Americans voted against the side who caused them to feel poorer (= high inflation), even if this had little to do with the politics themselves. Let's hope this 'going with the wind' does not cause the ship to sail into a deadly storm....

Livio Accattatis

As an European this is just WILD to me. Kamala to us just seems like such an average person but still quite a bit more inspiring than our typical leaders. Trump just sounds like way too much to handle in every possible way, and really unpredictable as well. Glad he accepted the results this time though haha

Ryan, I've never been a believer in history repeating itself. After all, what is time other than the prevention of everything happening all at once or all over again. However, history does seem to echo into the future in subtle but persistent ways. Like a ghost with unfinished business. America's elections seem to resonate as much.

Mike

I’d imagine you’d give a similar response to that of Sam Harris regarding the recent election, I could be wrong. Either way I am very ignorant of Middle East so this is a welcoming topic instead. I do buy some books you reference so can’t wait to see if any peek my interest for further exploration on the topic. Hopefully you’ll be able to go France this week, good luck!

Tanner Hagen

Good luck, Ryan, or should it be bonne chance? I hope you are keeping up your French lessons; you will need them. Very much looking forward to an excursion into Iran, an amazing country. Put America on the back burner for a while and consider offering us a quiet reflect on your immersion into French culture, for us, doing that every day of work will be a pleasure not a chore.

Dan

Can’t wait for the Iran project! Hope you’re doing well Ryan.

Zach LaPrade

Thank you for your thoughtful and introspective work Ryan. Please take care of yourself and do not feel pressured to overwork yourself. As has been oft said by many much wiser, all the greatest things take time. Don't lose your passion on the youtube content machine treadmill. Always a pleasure to hear your insights and research on whatever topics you've chosen to dissect and present. Keep it up and please keep well :)

I hope your French is better than mine LOL. If you're already able to estimate the length of the next video, I'm guessing you're in the post-production phase, which I imagine is probably the most tedious. If I were you (which I'm not), I wouldn't be afraid to cut corners on post-production to focus on adjusting to the new place. My feelings about the election subsided after approximately 36 hours, but my thoughts still remain. I'm also resisting the urge to discuss the election with others. Of course I think the election is important, but I don't have any particularly unique perspective on the election that can't be found elsewhere, and I think everyone will overcomplicate their analysis of the results, just as they overcomplicated their predictions, not out of ignorance, but as a means to occupy themselves. As important as it is to reflect about this election, I have a feeling that nobody is going to learn anything from what happened, and no amount of insight from any individual will change that, so I'm just trying to busy myself with Thanksgiving plans. Speaking of which, good timing on moving to France so you can avoid the inevitably chaotic Thanksgiving dinner table debates.

Many here in USA are horrified this small minded extremist criminal was voted in. Many people who voted think he is going to help them- sadly it will turn out to be a rue.

Idk man take a break from American politics, I think there's going to be alot of change in the coming years so any take on ot right now may be outdated. I personally belive rather than a political explanation a social behavioral approach is best, I think scott Galloway has the right interpretation of things.

Justin

Hi Ryan, we miss you man but praying that your move to France moves smoothly. The election feels like the beginning of a new era in American history. As a millennial, it feels like everything is a historic moment 😂. Thankful for your content reminding us that we’re not the only ones who are living in unprecedented times it’s just that we have way more access to information than our ancestors did.

You know I was a harris voter, cause I'm quite concerned about JD Vance and the people behind him. But seeing the democrats reaction makes me wonderdo they not have any sort self awareness? I'm quite baffeled. They alienated the very class of people they should've had support from in spades.

Justin

We expect things to be a little slow with major life events going on. As to the election, I feel it was probably the lesser of two evils that won. It is also arguably the best thing that could have happened to the democratic party. I hope they learned their lesson and pull back towards a moderate position on the political spectrum.

Vlasimuth

I think it's fine for you to ignore week by week politics, I've always valued what seems timelessly educational about your content and because of that the wait is never a bother. As for how I'm feeling, as a moderate I enjoy the emotional high my Republican friends are feeling and I try to help reground my left wing friends by reminding them it's just the presidency and not the US monarch. It's surprising to me how many people don't understand the civic structure that keeps things from being too crazy.

Hope it’s all going well! From the perspective of me and my uk based echo chamber, most people seem confused and saddened by the US election results. Some people don’t really see much difference between the two parties and think either outcome would have been bad for the US. There are a lot of conversations around what the result means for women, either by discussing what looks like certain disenfranchisement for women in the states, but also speculation around why/how women came to vote for a sexual predator over another woman. Personally I think the far right are a threat to the UK and we need to learn from the US around what we need to do to prevent it from taking power here too.

Lemmy Henry

Keep up with the good work mate! I hope you have a good time in France!

Hi Ryan, I’ve been listening to your works for a few weeks now and I enjoy them thoroughly. I myself am both Iranian and French, so I both welcome you to France and am curious to find out what you will say on Iran. I hope you have great journey ahead of you and good luck with the French!

Bijan Shambayati

Glad you’re hanging in there! Life is always filled with challenges we can learn from. Can’t wait to see your next fabulous project!
