Riff Writing Masterclass

So while we do primarily cover lead guitar playing here at the Guitar School,
I do think that maintaining your rhythm chops is super important to your ongoing growth as a guitarist. As well as the obvious advantages of keeping your picking hand dextrous, and being a great way to practice your hand synchronization, riff writing is also an absolutely fantastic way to get you thinking about harmony more and understand how to work within the structure of a kill.

So in this riff writing masterclass I'm gonna show you the principles of how myself, and many other pro guitarists, approach composition and how to apply these principles to your own writing. Let's get riffing!

1:16 Making riffs with scales
10:24 Rhythm and syncopation

"Do that, do that, do the other, do that". I just wrote my first riff in AABA 🤘 Seriously though man, great masterclass. So many tips packed in. I can bust out the traditional power chord riffs but so much more flavour to add with this. I watched this in bits and pieces without my guitar and will definitely be going back to this multiple times with my guitart. I've started something towards the December Riff Challenge as well.

I've written some riffs in the past but this was huge to start making my writing more interesting, never seen someone explain it so in depth, great work

Yes! Putting together a Guitar101 series for beginners

Great lesson, I’d never considered riffs in sections before, almost like mini-songs in themselves.

Dan Fairs

Super useful lesson, thank you Bradley! Are you planning to do some bending lessons for beginners?

A. Szabó

Hi Bradley, So from what I gather, a good example of syncopation would be the song "Heal my wounds" by COC?

Cheers Brooks!

Bradley Hall

Sure are! Hope you enjoy the lesson

Bradley Hall

Exactly what I needed! Thank you!

Brooks Hardy

Oh man, I can’t wait to actually watch this! Rhythm chops are so important
